I went to Fitness First Murray St one afternoon just to enquire about membership costs and check out the facilities and classes/training that they offer as I was shopping around for a gym in the city. As I was on a budget all I wanted to know was prices. No one would give me a straight answer (all I wanted was an info pamphlet or something!) - instead I had to have a lengthy consultation with a trainer/sales rep to discuss my long-term goals and "what had lead me to my current weight." Before I knew it I had been pressured into signing a very expensive 12-month contract and they were asking for my direct debit details. I really wanted time to think about it so I lied and said I didn't know my BSB so I couldn't go ahead with it. The sales staff insisted I used their "courtesy computer" to go on my netbanking site so I could find out all my banking details. I felt really uncomfortable. This gym is clearly not focused on the goals of their clients, they are more interested in commission and sales. I left the gym and went home to think about it. I went back the next day (quite angry) and asked that my contract be torn up as I really didn't want to go ahead with it. The sales staff who I had spoken to the day prior had suddenly lost nice personality and insisted I speak to the management (as they could no longer help me with my request) and the management was even more pushy then the first staff. They were really rude and once again tried to pressure me into this. In the end I got very angry and said I wanted the contract destroyed . In the weeks that followed I received continuous phone calls from the consultant asking me if I would be interested in special membership offers "exclusive to those who live in the city / work for Company X / etc" and I kept saying no. After about the 5th call I had to demand that they not phone me again, saved the mobile number they were calling from and screened ALL my calls. GUYS DON'T GO WITH FITNESS FIRST!! Even walking past now on my way home I still cringe. I have joined a much better gym now and everyone there is lovely!
