I own an older car so am on a quest to find 'the one' - a regular mechanic who does a good job who can become MY regular. I am not a car expert and when I find 'the one' I'm going to hang onto him, by God. Don't think we found him here. Or if he does work here, it's not the one we got. On the way home from eastern suburbs to inner west, my car stalled pretty much the entire way in peak hour traffic on Friday afternoon. I limped home and had to abandon the car 15min away from home... it was off the temperature scale and undrivable (stalling very badly). We recovered the car next day (engine cold) and it stalled on the roundabout 1min down the road. Nursed the car along to Fivedock Automotive Services 1st thing Monday morning. Mechanic rang up to say he couldn't replicate the problem (!). Coaxed him to try harder, as we aren't in the habit of going through the hassle of visiting mechanics saying the car is about ready to disintegrate when it isn't. Mechanic did get it to stall, and noticed the overheating problem but later claimed to have fixed it, so came to collect 1st thing next morning to drive it to work (optimism). Didn't get 2min away before it was obvious there was still a big problem with stalling. Car had to be left again. More phone calls, some replacement parts. Got car first thing Thursday, drove home without stalling (yay), but still massive overheating problem which turned out to be coolant completely out. You'd think the mechanic would have noticed/mentioned this... if there's an overheating issue, he'd check this wouldn't he? So either he didn't notice, forgot, or didn't care. Summary: problem was fixed eventually, but took 2 goes (how common is it to get a phone call on the first day saying 'can't see a problem'? do they expect you to go 'oh, ok, silly me must be hallucinating I'll come back and get it then'?) and 2 days turnaround time (not even mentioning the effect of juggling all this toing and froing on work) and we still had an overheating problem which they didn't say anything about. May need to keep looking... Fivedock has a ton of auto shops, he must be here! Mr Mechanic, where are you?
