I went to the flower drum recently as many people had told me how good it was. I found the food to be delicious and i couldn't get enough of the Peking duck. Yum!!! It was quite busy but overall i found it a great experience.

Background: I have eaten allot of Chinese food in my life ( seems like I've been tortured by endless banquets with relatives barking "eat! eat!"). And about 6 months before I'd spent 11 days in Guilin (Southern China) recently, so I entered Flower Drum with much curiosity. And a willingness to part with moderately more funds than usual to sate this curiosity.

Food wise, you get what you pay for: consistently great ingredients, rewarding flavours and friendly, relaxed service.

I see from some of the reviews that some don't value these three aspects - and that's fine, some of my rewarding eating out experiences have been pigging out on yummy food. But this isn't Flower drum.

The prawns were fresh and fantastic, and the duck was (marginally) better than anything I'd tasted before. The ambience made my date relaxed and happy, and we had a great time.

If you want solidly great food, and great service and are willing to pay for it - flower drum seems like a great candidate.

We had a pleasant time at the restaurant and the food was reasonably good enough but I cant say for sure because there was so little of it ! It was gone before you good really appreciate it. I am not a greedy person - but surely you go out to eat because you are hungry as well as for fun and ambiance ! So if you have a healthy appetite I'd strongly recommend finding some where else ! Typical Cantonese style, with an airy spacious dining area, but low on ambiance. Pleasant staff. My main criticism would be that its almost morally offensive to see a restaurant charging more than some people earn in a day in this world for a small bowl of plain steamed rice. You just feel offended. Try somewhere else perhaps - there are plenty of alternatives in Melbourne's Chinatown.

Disapointing! First time to The Flower Drum and I had high expectations.I travel reguarly to China and have experienced better quality all round for a fraction of the price. Service was not polished although friendly and attentive. Meal presentation poor. Food quality good however no ping. Expensive.

This may have been Australia's best Chinese restaurant once but unfortunately not any more. I went along expecting to experience something like the Iron Chef style of high-end Chinese cooking but turned out to be very average. The restaurant really needs to improve on several levels. Disappointing.

l went out with a group of friends and all our meals were cooked to perfection. Highly recommend, excellent customer service shown they were so friendly, but book in advance always busy.

Excellent restaurant and indeed the best Chinese in Australia. The service was impeccable - one of the dinner guests did not eat seafood (it was a banquet dinner for about 30), the waiter noticed that he was not touching his seafood meals and before we knew it, all of his meals were substituted with meat dishes. Highly recommended.

Live it up at this world-class Cantonese fine dining venue with impeccable service and exquisite cuisine to match. Choose the banquet so that you don’t miss out on any of the specialities such as sang choi bao, Peking duck pancakes, grain-fed eye fillet with black pepper sauce and your dessert of choice.

YOU'VE got to admire the chutzpah of a restaurant that, despite the economic gloom, has an employee whose primary task is pressing the elevator button.

Still, it's good to see Flower Drum is staring down the wolves of commerce with some of the best staff-to-guest ratios you're likely to witness outside of Gitmo.

Engage your waiter, relax, and see what they can really do here.

Its name has international currency, while in Melbourne, 'Flower Drum' is as much a status brand as the priciest real estate or Chateau d'Yquem. But does hype match reality?

World fame has not affected our treasured place – there’s still exquisite Cantonese cuisine and superior service. As you alight from the lift and are greeted like a long-lost friend, the magic starts. Specialities of the house include Peking duck and seafood but Flower Drum prides itself on making every dish tantalisingly distinctive. Iconic, pricey, and indulgent but oh-so good.

Word from regulars was that Flower Drum was "back", reinvigorated. And they were right.

It's something of a foodie thing in Melbourne, an unwritten rule: don't order off the menu at Flower Drum.
