Behind the faintly nanna-esque lace curtains is one of the most charming bars around.

When it comes to bar-hopping, it's fair to say that most of us spend our time in pursuit of a couple things - the ultimate cocktail, perfectly poured beer or best company - but first and foremost would be the pursuit of a place you can call your local. And not just somewhere in your locality that has reasonably priced drinks and is within stumbling distance of home but a bar where you can feel at home without worry of a brusque encounter with unfamiliar staff or the shame of asking where the dunnies are. Gerald's Bar is such a place. Reviews that faff wildly over a particular record/book/film/bar usually turn my stomach but Gerald's presents no antidote to that ill: there is nothing about the place that isn't great. Even the relatively early closing time seems like a blessing in disguise when your big night out doesn't feel so huge the morning after and you can walk home smelling the roses of Rathdowne Street.
