Gertrude and Alice at Bondi is more than an ode to this sapphic partnership, it is also a café and bookstore dealing in new and second hand books. My current favourite spot. The 2nd hand (as well as new) books are good quality choices to browse through with lots of spot on staff recommendations for new authors and titles. The food here is also really good. I've had good coffee a few times and keep ordering the haloumi salad because it's so tasty. Really rate this place!
A dear friend of mine brought me here ages ago, and I just happened to stumble by the place yesterday. This place not only brought back wonderful memories of sipping my coffee whilst perusing their numerous books, but also of my time with my friend! One of Bondi's best hidden gems.
Friends of mine in the past have commented on Gertrude & Alice being pretentious and the staff's rude demeanour but my love of books kept me hooked. Until now. On first sight I fell in love. My last review of Gertrude and Alice was rejected, probably because I raved about it so much that I sounded like the owner posting a fake review. But I wanted to try again, because I really do like this place and think it deserves a good write-up. It's friendly and cosy and the kind of place everyone wants as their local cafe.
