Gertrude and Alice Cafe Bookshop

Directions
Gertrude and Alice at Bondi is more than an ode to this sapphic partnership, it is also a café and bookstore dealing in new and second hand books. This is the ideal place to head if you want to have a drink whilst perusing the pages of a novel. The chai tea is a particular favourite amongst locals, as is the Moroccan mint tea. Meanwhile, the cuisine is traditional café fare, with plenty of options for the health conscious. Why not try the homely mushroom and leak soup? The perfect spot to escape and unwind.

Reviews of Gertrude and Alice Cafe Bookshop

Friends of mine in the past have commented on Gertrude & Alice being pretentious and the staff's rude demeanour but my love of books kept me hooked. Until now.

On first sight I fell in love. A wonderful second hand bookshop where you can sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee or a wholesome meal. However, I became increasingly frustrated on subsequent visits when the narrow shop was so crowded that we were unable to find seats and had to eat elsewhere before coming back to browse the books. Even then, trying to search for titles or pick out books to look at is impossible when there are groups of people eating lunch and blocking the bookcases.

Despite all of this, I continued to visit and invested a lot of time and money purchasing many books and sampling a variety of dishes from the simple, limited and overpriced menu.

The final disappointing blow came when I dared to ask to trade several of my own books for some of theirs. The staff barely even looked at them before abruptly telling me that they couldn't accept them. No explanation was given at all. Given that I had bought most of these books from them in the first place, I was very offended. More so given the fact that most of these titles are popular and sought after.

My love affair with Gertrude & Alice is over.

My last review of Gertrude and Alice was rejected, probably because I raved about it so much that I sounded like the owner posting a fake review. But I wanted to try again, because I really do like this place and think it deserves a good write-up. It's friendly and cosy and the kind of place everyone wants as their local cafe. The food is good, fresh cafe food, and the corn fritters and burrito I've had here have been great. The chai is really good too, and I like that the tea comes in pretty little mismatched cups and saucers. The bookstore itself is quite big, and a really nice space to have a browse and a cup of tea. It can get popular on weekends but there arent really enough tables for it to be so busy that service is affected. The bargain bin out the front is worth checking out and often has some good secondhand books.

Good spot to pass an hour or two browsing through the 4 (i think!) floors of books that they have on offer. They do a good coffee too ... and the chocolate brownies are especially good.

Nice to hang out on a rainy day enjoying a great coffee while reading little bits out of their amazing collection of second hand books. Staff is usually pretty busy so not much time for customers. The food is freshly made and generally more healthy than most places!

A discerning buyer makes this second-hand bookshop exciting and interesting visiting. I've picked up some real gems here. Sadly the staff always seem to be a smidge moody but they a good coffee anyway.
