Gigi is one of what must be more than a hundred eateries in Swanston St bwteen Bourke and LaTrobe Sts.

A lot of these places cater mainly for the late-night Thursday-Saturdayy crowd, which is undiscriminating. I mean it's not the inner-city foodies, it's backpackers and people who come to go to the pubs and dlcubs and movies and most of them are drunk and have been dancing all night, keeping their stomachs quiet by sharing bowls of wedges, and now they want to grab something quick and cheap before either catching a train home or going to another club to party some more.

Mainly I think of Japanese restaurants as either having giant robots offereing you sushi, or quiet places with small menus offering a small menu of very fresh exquisite, subtle food. Gigi is not that. Gigi caters to parties that might have someone in them who is whingeing about eating Japanese by having an extensive menu that includes things like curry puffs and lemon grass chicken.

I had the creamy garlic chicken set, which is chunks of chicken in a creamy sauce, with a fried salad (lettuce and bean sprouts), with rice and miso soup. The chicken was tough, I couldn't taste the garlic, the rice was chewy, the miso soup was bland, the fried salad was oily but at least you could actually taste it. At least it only cost $8.80. What the other tables were getting didn't look very exciting either. The staff are cheerful, service is Ok but not brilliant, the place isn't a standout for cleanlinesss. I'd probably have been better off at MacDonalds.

For those who know the area a little better, there's Japanese that's a bit better in Russell St and around there, not far away. If you're with a lot of drunk friends who just want to grab something quick, it's OK, but there's better nearby. If you want good Japanese, it's not far away but you have to wait longer and pay more. This is at the lower end of the CBD eating experience.
