I grew up in Boondall so you may think my opinion biased, but I have traveled many times throughout South East Asia and have spent the last 10 years living in Europe and can honestly say the Golden Bamboos' Chili Salt prawns are the best in the world! Just thinking about them brings tears to my ears. They are that good I feel like jumping on a plane right now and flying half way round the world just to savor their salty spicy crispness!
Second to the fantastic chili salt prawns is the Hundred Flower Chicken. This dish is a personal favorite of mine. Unfortunately despite asking and many hundreds of Chinese restaurants around the world, the only place I have ever found it is at the Golden Bamboo. I have some mates from mainland China who tell me it is a very traditional dish and is never found in Western Chinese restaurants. I wonder why the Golden Bamboo has it on it menu then? Perhaps it because of it's connection to the now defunct Chinese takeaway opposite at Sues Corner. My parents, who celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary a few years back, uesed to get Chinese take-a-way from Sues Corner on their way to the local drive in cinema. It was the first Chinese take-a-way in Australia! The owner/chief was Bob, and his brother Eddie created the Golden Bamboo opposite.
Anyway, if you ever have the chance, or you are reading this review now, then don't worry if it's an hour or more drive away, I guarantee it is worth the effort. Be sure to introduce yourself to the current proprietors - Jenifer and her husband Fat.
