Lovely staff. Need more variety though. And a full plate of food is almost the same price as the tiny glass of juice you get!

Both my boyfriend and I are no strangers to vegetarian cooking - and he is particularly fond of learning new recipes... so for his birthday I decided to take a gamble and book us both into what was advertised as a 'vegetarian cooking class' at Govinda's Restaurant on Saturday night. We arrived to a room completely decked out with hari krishna paraphernalia and a motley crew of strange people sitting at tables with salty peanuts and vile chocolate pieces. These odd types were seated around what appeared to just be one table at the front with a single element for cooking. My boyfriend was already giving me looks and alarm bells were going off in my head - but I wanted to give it a go anyway - so we took a seat after paying and it was then that the true horror began to unfold. This 'cooking' class started off with a strange MC going on for fifteen long minutes about how good the chef was and we became extremely bored. Finally the chef came out and proceeded to lecture us on how salt was a 'killer' and not to use it in cooking (when everyone knows that salt is essential in cooking!) and then put in what I considered a 'killer' entire slab of butter into a pan, some strange smelling cheese, some blended spinach and some curry powder and called it a dish? It would be ok if it tasted great, so I reserved total judgement until tasting. Then (after only 15 minutes out of the 2 hour class booking) he said he'd finished the teaching?!? and handed over to some random lady who then proceeded to talk to us about homiopathic remedies for twice as long as he did with his lesson! I was livid and so was my boyfriend. So far, we'd learnt that salt was a killer - but that arsenic was good for you in small amounts in homiothapy! After that lady finally sat down - another 15 minutes were spent giving out lucky door prizes (that turned out to be hari krishna chanting books)! I was beside myself. Finally, the food came out (keep in mind that NONE of it had been demonstrated to us in a cooking sense apart from the spinach cheesy nightmare) and we thought well we might as well sample this food before abandoning the night entirely.... BIG MISTAKE. I literally had 2 mouthfuls - one of a disgusting fried specimen (no idea what it was called) and one of the dish the chef had taught us - and both were so vile that it was then that we decided to call it quits and go somewhere else for dinner to try and salvage this birthday night turned into nightmare. I started to feel sick on the way to the other restaurant, and when we sat down, my boyfriend - who i have NEVER seen throw up since we've been together (over 3.5 years) suddenly leapt up and ran to the bathroom to vomit. Ten minutes later, I did the same. DO NOT go to this restaurant - neither for it's sham 'cooking classes' or to eat - if you have any kind of disearnable palette or like to keep your food down. Worst food exprience - ever. Could not have scripted this if I had tried.

WOW! you have got to give this a go! I dont know how many people say to me "aww i am not eating vegetarian" and after i take them to Govindas, they realise that you cant even tell that its only vegetarian! you must MUST have the halava desest, they are amazing! they even have many hari krisher books available to browse, the atmosphere is relaxing and casual! not the kind of place for Paris wanna-be's as its not a yuppie establishment.

Beautiful vegetarian fare here to satisfy even the most carnivorous of taste buds - very wholesome and filling. They have now stopped the all you can eat. Now you pay the same price for the same plate full of food - just that you can't go back for seconds. Price still includes the delicious halawa (??) dessert and homemade lemon drink. Walls are extremely brightly coloured and lined with hari krishna books creating an no-fills, though warm and eccentric surrounding.
