A city hotel's watering hole is a comfortable place to retreat for a tipple.
For more than 70 years, the Grace Hotel was the Grace Building, the Sydney headquarters of Grace Bros, the retail chain. Inspired by the Tribune Building in Chicago it was built to be a grand, elegant and inspiring building in the heart of Sydney - and it still is. From the street, the Grace's honey-toned terracotta tile facade glows, day and night. Inside, if you wander through particular sections of the foyer, original examples of gothic and art deco design abound. In the hotel refit, beautiful marble floors, staircases and columns, delicately coloured glass light fittings, intricate ironwork, pressed ceilings and rich wooden fittings were kept or restored. It is all very handsome even with the addition of various retail outlets and, in one corner, an Irish pub. My elegant drinking companion and I spy Bar 77 Grace on the mezzanine level, well signposted and accessible by an escalator.
