You guessed it, the site of this popular West End café was once home to a gunshop. These days the brews being turned out here have a cult following in Brisbane and it’s especially popular on weekends (so it’s likely you’ll have to wait for a table). The coffee is decadent, the food is excellent (make sure you sample the home-made baked beans), and the atmosphere is great. Open from just after sunrise until well into the night (with a menu that changes accordingly), you can drop by pretty much any time that strikes your fancy. And once you’ve visited you’ll quickly understand why Delicious magazine dubbed the Gunshop the best café in Australia.

Everybody’s talking about the Gunshop’s breakfasts, such as potato fetta hash cakes, spinach, grilled tomato and herbed sour cream. This eatery (in a shop that was once a gunshop) has gone from strength to strength since opening seven years ago. New owner Jason Coolen (ex-Pier Nine) and head chef Mark Turville (ex-Harveys) are doing great things for dinner too, like sugar-cured Wilga Vale venison with chats, roast baby beet, turnips and white port demi-glaze. A well-matched selection of drinks includes refreshers like Pimm’s and sangria. Mains average: $19.
