Great food. The dining area is fairly stark, but what it lacks in ambience it makes up in value. You can get a very wholesome meal. The food is never greasy and it's loaded with lots of quality ingredients and veges. I always feel quite healthy after eating here. I strongly recommend this restaurant to a hungry family on a budget , who would love a night out without blowing their whole grocery bill for the week.

You get what you pay for at The Happy Chef. It's quick and cheap. The food is OK but there is way better chinese food around the city especially in and around Chinatown. It does make a change from the 300 Thai restaurants on King Street Newtown though.

Eating here is like eating in the middle of a 7 Eleven. It's very bright. Don't eat here if you're trying to hide blemishes on your face or stains on your shirt. Nothing can possibly go unnoticed in that lighting.

It's often said that you should judge a restaurant by the state of their toilets. If that was the case at the Happy chef, they would have very few customers.

My advice - eat here when you are in a hurry. Don't go to the bathtoom.

Food is reasonably priced - a bargain for students on budget. The flavour of food is not overbearing nor too modern. Real comfort food. Serving size is big that for a big-eater like me, I can share a dish with another friend and we will be both satisfied with our portion.

Happy chef very rarely disappoints. The laksa is hot and plentiful, while the crispy chicken is crispy and good. There is something for pretty much anyone. Just go with your instincts and pick from the pictures. Grab a bunch of six and have a loud night out (Vinatge Cellars is just down the road, but Happy Chef also serves beer). Alternatively, grab the paper, have an oolong tea and relax on your own with a prawn or pork noodle soup while the place bustles around you. Make no mistake, this is cafeteria style, so leave the prom-queens out of it. Handy hint No.1: there's a big tray of condiments, throw some fish sauce over your chicken or some soy over your duck. Handy hint No.2: The seafood is very fresh and cooked hot 'n' fast - order and enjoy!!

Excellent and athenic chinese cusine. A must try for chinese food lovers. I would recommend the 'Emperor's chicken' disk and 'duck hot pot'. The customer service is quite friendly on most occasions.

I have never given a place 5/5 nor do I even like giving a super positive review as it means it will just get buser. But if you like great tasting chineese and a little above average price come here.

The atmosphere is crap, the service is crap (they barely speak English) but you come for the food. Sometimes at night you can't get a seat, but lunch is fine.

Oh yeah if you like eating between that time most places close ie 3pm to 5:30pm Happy Chef is always open. Don't tell others this place rocks, but it does rock. The only place I have given 5/5!

you get exactly what you expect at happy chef. It's cheap but good chinese in a big take-away syle environment. Hits the spot and is always quick service for dinner in a rush. The laksa is really good.

Cheap and cheerful. Easy to order with a picture menu. Great place to people watch. Food is ok but perhaps not the best place to eat if you are after a romantic dinner.
