THERE has to be a first for everything. And in Perth's quixotic local restaurant scene the precedents just get more and more bizarre.

I'm at Harry's ? Northbridge's brand new revamped "cooler than school" bar and restaurant ? and, uncharacteristically, have a yearning for steak, mushroom and beer-braised pie. When I point to it on the menu and order, the waiter, Tuan, says: "How would you like the steak done, madame?" OMG! Is this one of those deconstructed places that offer a mushroom, a cube of meat on a circle of puff pastry and serve it with a glass of beer? Thankfully, the question turns out to be just a curious misunderstanding. But Tuan was spot-on ? before and after this hiccup ? and outshines everything in this city-slicker setting: the carpet, wallpaper, curved leather seats and white tablecloths. There?s also the continual doof-doof drowning out the audio from the several plasma screens dotted around the recently refurbished restaurant ? with a new tavern licence ? that has shaken the old war-weary veteran, Simon?s Seafood Restaurant, well and truly out of complacency.
