From the outside, Hinode Japanese is an unassuming restaurant, but venture in and be pleasantly surprised by the authentic cuisine including sushi, sashimi and a selection of cooked dishes. It's a good venue for an informal feed.

I had dinner with girlfriends here tonight. It's simple, good quality Japanese food. The decor isn't amazing but at this price point it's clean and tidy.

The beef teriyaki was tender, the sashimi was amazingly fresh, the miso soup was tasty (could have done with some more tofu but not to worry). The food was beautifully presented.

The only thing that cost them the star was the service. It was friendly and the food was fast to arrive but the clearing could do with a little improvement - we had finished eating at least 45 mins before the plates were cleared. Not a deal breaker but I wasn't wild about it.

That said, I do recommend this place for cheap but absolutely delish Japanese food.

Quiet and private would be your first impression, away from the hustle and bustle of Chatswood cafes and Makoto up the road.
Polite, friendly man makes the sushi, with a person at the back and two girls at the front. The waitresses are a bit hard to catch the attention of.
Food service is reasonable, but it's the quality of the food that impresses:
The gyoza, soft shell crab hand rolls, teriyaki eggplant and the udon (nabeyaki or katsu) are all stunners, as are the California hand rolls.
Extreme value for money, it's a regular joint for me and the family :)

I found the service at Hinode to be quite bad, as despite asking multiple times, I was unable to have my green tea refilled. The food however, is very tasty, the sushi and sashimi made from fresh ingredients. There is a bit of a language barrier, which may be why the service isn't as good as it could be.
