Hong Kong BBQ is a good, honest BBQ restaurant. It's one of the few places in Fishscray open 'till ten - Golden Harvest around the corner is another - and it's popular with people coming off late work in the city, since it's not hard to find parks. The atmosphere is your usual formica-topped tables, but a little bit more warm and cosy. There are booths too, always very popular with Western customers, you have to be early to grab one. It's usually pretty busy.

I had my favourite which I eat most places, a pork and century egg congee, with Chinese doughnut (Chinese bread) on the side (Chinese places don't put this on their menu, but if they have Chinese customers they usually have it. It's oily but great to drop in your soup. Chinese places always have stuff that is not on the menu, and if you want them to make something according to your tastes you just ask). The Congee is a bit more robust than around the corner at Golden Harvest, showing that this place is also used by working Chinese customers who expect a real meal (many Chinese do not cook at home at all). It has egg and some nice bits of crispy dough stuff on top. Not quite as good as at Golden Harvest, which a friend described as 'exquisite', but pretty good all the same, and just a tad cheaper at $8.50 for the congee. The delectable dripping roasts in the window are better - it's a specialist BBQ place, after all. My friend had a Roast Duck on rice, very crispy and yummy, lots of fat...mmmmm. Even your weight-conscious lady friends will gobble it up, tell you. And you'll get out of there well under $30 for two, under $20 if you want.

Why do the Vietnamese get it so right with drinks and the Chinese so wrong? I'll tell you why: for two thousand years, China has been about tea and wine. In the Chinese Civil Service ["I am about to scream madly in the office/Especially when they bring more papers to pile higher on my desk." - Tu Fu, 758 AD] they always had a teapot in a padded straw basket which was there all day and the boy would constantly replenish. You can easily buy a teapot-in-a-basket in Footscray if you want to try this for yourself. The Chinese figure if it works, why change it, and I'm not about to argue with that. They're not having with no Longan Ice or Lemon Soda with egg. However if you want iced coffee the rather less warm and intimate Golden Harvest is your shot.

Next time I review a Chinese restaurant I'll tell you how to make smoked eggs at home. Cheers!
