Hunan Chinese Restaurant is a refreshing change to the standard western Chinese that many people are familiar with. A staple or many years in Fortitude Valley, Hunan Chinese Restaurant may have changed locations but has not changed its dedication to flavour. Hunan Chinese is a spicier version of traditional western Chinese and many of the recipes are traditional, spices are applied liberally so this restaurant is not for those who like the mild flavouring of traditional western Chinese. The décor is simple but the focus is purely on the food. Hunan Chinese Restaurant is fully licensed but BYO beer and wine is allowed.

This restaurant has moved from its old haunt at the Chinatown Mall entrance of the T.C. Beirne building to a new location beneath the Golden Palace near the Ann Street end of the mall. But it still has the same carved chairs, rich furnishings and newspaper clippings of Chairman Mao. The menu is filled with complex, Hunan dishes, which tend to be spicier than those of Szechuan. There is plenty of offal and cured and smoked ingredients. The menu changes seasonally and is approached holistically, with the effect of different foods on the body being considered. It’s best if you bring your own wine.
