Hidden away on Warners Avenue in Bondi, Jed's Food Store is a pleasant surprise for those walking about seeking a fresh, great tasting breakfast or lunch. The cuisine has a Jamaican edge that will appeal to those who are seeking something different – taste the Jamaican porridge with baked bananas and lime zest. If you want to be healthy, why not order one of the frappes full of fruit and nutrients? The fair trade coffee will also appeal to the socially conscious. Meanwhile, enjoy the casual, eclectic atmosphere with the mismatched cushions and plates.

Jed's is a really popular spot and can get so busy on weekends that I don't bother coming very often. But when I have the patience to stick it out and wait for a table, it's always worth it. The service can be a bit basic, and it helps if you're a local and know someone working there (annoying but it's the same in so many cliquey Bondi cafes) but it's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination. They do some pretty unusual and unhealthy but brilliant-for-a-hangover dishes like the potato cakes with bacon and maple syrup. It's not your average cafe food and has a Caribbean-Mexican kind of bent, with burritos and Jamaican porridge some of the best dishes here. The eggs kurosawa is their signature, and comes with brown rice, nori seaweed, teriyaki tofu and wasabi. Not my bag for breakfast but really popular and apparently awesome.

I LOVE the quesadillas here. I am not a big "spend a load for brekky" type person, but for 8 or 9 bucks, this is awesome value. 3 packed corn quesadillas, with a scrumptious homemade salsa (I want that recipe!), and a bit of salad on the side, it is nearly enough for two people! Always busy, great coffee, and an authentic collection of Mexican ingredients (La Costena) for those refried beans, nopales etc. The chorizo scrambled eggs were ok, but it's those quesadillas every time for me. WINNER!

Jeds makes great banana smoothies and has a really original menu where everything on it sounds delicious! It has a chilled vibe and theres always an enticing selection of pre-prepared food. Having been to New Mexico recently, I can vouch that the menu is authentic Mexican.

Bustling little cafe near the beach rd hotel. Always busy serving pretty good food and coffee. Good place to nurse the hangover.

Leave the beach's body-beautiful promenade behind and chill out in a retro-Jamaican haven.

North Bondi is a short stroll away from the famous beach and the mood couldn't be more different. In the sunny back streets, the residents reign and the attitude is part boho, part Rasta, part politico and totally removed from the skin-revealing strut of the boardwalk. The preferred style is lanky, laid-back and appealingly disheveled. Handmade is good, exotic is better. One look is aviator sunglasses, painted fingernails, trader beads and carefully mussed hair - and that is a bloke. On Sunday, when the market at the primary school is full of vintage hounds and brunch is in full swing, a favourite gathering spot for the locals is Jeds Food Store. Jeds is at the Seven Ways crossroads and once would have been a corner butcher's shop. But it is the archetypal Sydney cafe now. Reggae music is pumping and so is the takeaway coffee trade. Outside, on the generous paved path and a patch of grass, people gather in the shade of a huge, drooping eucalypt. Dogs lie panting and kids...
