  This is a Melbourne Chinese stalwart with its own MySpace fan club.

  Friday night in Melbourne's CBD holds all sorts of dangers and temptations. Luckily I'm old and ugly enough that most of them take a wide berth as we kick through the swaying mobs looking for somewhere to eat. I'm thinking that going home for a cheese sandwich is a safer option until we duck down Waratah Place on a whim. And there, in this alley of sex shop back doors, is the rather inappropriately named Kum Den, a Melbourne Chinese stalwart with its own MySpace fan club. There were rumours that it had shut for renovations never to reopen but here it was bold as brass - the same long list of claypot dishes and with a laminex interior that is clothed at night but that seems brighter and more modern than I remember. So maybe the first bit of the rumour was true.
