A simple, stairway entrance next-door to the Light Brigade hotel can easily be missed. Once inside however, it is apparent that that is one place that you dont want to pass-by. A large, warmly-lit restaurant with an impressive, vibrant bar area awaits at the top of the stairs, abuzz with people. The room is funky and fun with traditional white table-clothes. The staff are professional and polite. To kick-start our evening my friend and I order a limoncello & basil Martini and apple & celery martini. They are both delicious. After perusing the menu and we order our meals. My friend opts for the sea scallop risotto with fresh peas & it is superb. I order the rare char-grilled Angus beef fillet with beetroot, horseradish, crme fraiche & lemon. It is one of the best steaks I have had in a very long time cooked to perfection. After our meals we decide to stay by the bar and indulge in another one of La Scalas divine cocktails. There is a great vibe with other people near the bar having a drink. La Scala is a beautiful modern Italian restaurant/bar that makes for a great evening
I am sometimes sceptical about a restaurant that is above a pub. La Scala however, I was really impressed with. Quite a large floor space that is well utilised with a cocktail bar and a sleek finish. We sat next to a huge glass wine cabinet showcasing the options on the extensive wine list. The staff were very friendly and were happy to accommodate some of our fussy needs. We started with olives and some rock Oysters which were very salty and fresh. For mains I had the Italian roasted lamb which was cooked to perfection and my partner had an organic chicken dish. Coupled with a bottle of Sauv Blanc and a peach and rocket salad we really enjoyed our meals and the experience. La Scala also have a large dining room that can take bookings for groups of up to about 25 which is a fantastic way to enjoy a more private group dinner.
I turned my nose up at this place at first, as its situated above The Light Brigade, a pub I generally dont like. However, upon dining here, I quickly ate my words. I was here for a function, so we were cordoned off behind floor-to-ceiling curtains (sounds tacky, but it was actually beautiful). The area was perfectly lit by candles and dim lighting, and the table was decorated nicely. It didnt at all feel like I was in one of those function rooms I generally hate. The food was alternate drop, but I was very happy when I was dealt the organic roast chicken. It was full of flavour! I also tried the beef that the person next to me was given, which was also very good. They let us get pretty rowdy in the function area until close as well. Ill definitely be returning to try a few more of their dishes (as well as some of their famous cocktails).
