I recently had my wedding at Lachlan\'s Marquee with our ceremony held on the front steps of Old Government House.
The old Lachlans website, should be an indication of what to expect for any event at this venue. These days, having a great website designed is really easy! For not that much cash, they could really do something with it, but alas, the website remains outdated and as tired as the interior of the Marquee and as tired and unmotivated as their staff.
Despite the history and beauty of the venue, Management treats your event as just another number; booking events one after the other. I am always amazed at how people can provide a service in the Wedding Industry (which we all know is big bucks), and still have no concept of making people feel special or excited about their event.
One of the Management was particularly rude in most of my correspondence with them - abrupt and unyielding for no reason, despite my polite email enquiries. When we met face to face, they were condescending and made me feel like an idiot for no reason at all! Being the Bride, you would expect that they would be doing anything to make me feel special, but I was simply made to feel stupid, with any requests I had shot down. Instead of saying yes we can provide that for you etc, they were trying to talk me out of many ideas I had, simply because they couldn't be bothered. When asked if they could reserve a couple of spots in parking for the Bridal car and other parties, they could not make any arrangements of the sort. Family members who were part of the Bridal Party but not in the bridal car, had to quickly go look for parking and walk across the field (in high heels and dresses) to get to the ceremony, which was very stressful and time-consuming for them, delaying our ceremony.
Bump-in time was greatly effected as they had no storage for us to bring things for the reception set-up days before the event, and the staff had not even cleaned or set up for OUR wedding after the night before's event (tables & table cloths not in place, and floor very dirty, needing sweeping etc). This effected our set-up, and made our event run behind schedule. When my helpers were bumping-out, they were hurried up as another event was booked straight after our wedding!
Pricing for an Event High Tea was way above what we got food wise. Don't let them tell you that it is enough - it is NOT! Maybe I am used to big European/Ethnic dos where we have generous amounts of food, but even for a High Tea, it was tiny amounts of food for the price. Knowing this could be the case, we had also paid for canapes and champagne etc, to be served upstanding after the ceremony, which my new husband and I got none of! The left overs from the canapes/Hors d'oeuvres (as promised), were NOT given to us or served later (which would be logical and a routine thing to do in the food service industry, since we paid for it). God knows what happened to those delicious left-overs!
Staff were friendly but docile, and ineffectual - I had to tell them to bring food and tea etc to us at the Bridal Table several times - they seem to have forgotten us, even though we were supposed to be the centre of attention! MC/Maitre'D was lovely, but again, docile and with no self-motivation; I had to keep telling them what to do every 5 minutes, despite having provided them with detailed notes/ script and running sheet - leaving me to not enjoy the day. I was asked constantly what I wanted to have happen next.
Our food was minuscule despite being assured by management weeks before that the High Tea was more than enough food. Children got more food with their chicken and chips than the adults did with their over-priced High Tea. In the end, we paid about $70 per head for tiny amounts of food for our guests in a tired looking venue.
The Marquee at Lachlan's is a very tired looking venue. It could be great - it could be wonderful. But they need to look at really cleaning and sprucing up the place, including re-polishing the floorboards, and fixing those dreadful broken pots that greet you at the front door of the marquee! Thank goodness we had styled the event ourselves from head to toe, making it look much more beautiful than it usually does, or probably ever did.
Lachlan\'s needs to re-look at several things for their business to be highly sought after: Management needs to clean up their attitude to paying customers, and know the business of making one feel special; their website and Wedding Folder and other literature needs serious updating (come on, it does not cost that much to revamp a website and get a new folder with better quality images for potential new customers); they need to revamp their menus on offer; and their Marquee needs a serious clean and revamping (especially those broken ugly pots that are at the front door of the venue)!
