  • To Laurent Boulangerie Patisserie

French / European style breads, pastries, cakes and confectionary

Australian owned and operated, Laurent is a popular patisserie serving up a variety of delectable pastries, scrumptious specialty sandwiches, pies and baguettes and French / European style breads and confectionary. Indeed this is one of those places where the upmarket city crowd frequent for a 'quick bite' whether it's on the way to work or on the way home.

An all-time favorite patisseries. I have been coming here for years, the CBD and the Albert Park premises. Its a franchise that is found in major shopping centers like Chadstone and prime locations like Kew, CBD. The cakes are always well presented with so many different options. Apart from cakes they also do offer sandwiches and croissants. I have never had a wrong selection in choice of sweets as Ive found them to all be as yummy as presented. The only negative point I probably have it that it is quite overpriced and the coffee isnt always the best compared to the smaller coffee shops close by. Macaroons and lemon tarts has been a favorite for quite some time. Im yet to try their savory dishes, but again have not always found this to be appealing compared to heir sweets. On the picky end, I guess having traveled to Paris on a number of occasions I do have something to compare too.

I hunted down this place after seeing it on the Visit Victoria tourism website and was not disappointed. The decor was charming and the pastries absolutely beautiful. Flaws would be the noise of the coffee machine (almost a roaring, if you like), the rather icy service and the priciness of the desserts. 100% worth it though. Get a seat in the laneway outside and opt for a coffee/tea with one of their pastries and enjoy half an hour of absolute bliss. I recommend the Bahia and the Christine cakes.

A pricey but charming bakery with a strong European vibe, home to a delicious array of interesting (and artistic) cakes. Besides the basics - foccacia, pastries, and very nice coffee - those with a sense of adventure and a spare $7 will appreciate their petite sponge-and-mousse cakes, in such flavours as lime and raspberry. Despite Laurent's popularity, ample staff mean swift and cheerful service. During my visit, they even obligingly provided a box for taking home unfinished portions (those lemon meringue tarts are more formidable than they look). My well-travelled companion remarked that the decor was 'like stepping into Europe'. Being budget-conscious, I will not be back without another coupon, but I heartily recommend Laurent's to everyone who is not similarly constrained.
