my wife is cantonese and she makes amazing chinese food. however i have not found anywhere else in sydney that replicates it. this place is a cozy little gem tucked away in surry hills. its away from all the pretentious hustle and bustle of places such as long grain and billy kwongs. In fact if you just want genuine - non fancy - straight up cantonese food this is as genuine as it gets. I could picture my wifes mother making this. The flavour of Canton. And best of all its not hard on the pocket like the other places
We had a function here recently. The place is really cute and has a homely feel to it. It actually feels like you have gone over to someone's house for dinner. There are 2 function rooms available which you can have group dinners. This was great because we could just be relaxed and as loud as we wanted.
The food was good. Again it felt like dinner at someone's house. the food was fresh and authentic without being heavy and greasy. We were all shocked when we got the bill though as for what it was none of us thought it was worth it. We didn't even drink that much to justify the price.
There is better cantonese food available in Sydney but mahjong room has a nice and intimate atmosphere. Definitely worth trying but dont expect to be amazed. It feels like a good first date place.
I've been walking past this popular Cantonese restaurant for many, many years and always wanted to try it, which I finally did the other night.
We made a booking for 8.30pm, but when we arrived on time we were told our table for six wasn't ready yet. So we went to a bar down the road and waited. At about 8.50pm they rang and said they had a table for four available, but we decided to wait for a table that would fit us. It must have been 9.15pm when they rang and said our table was finally ready. So they definitely lose points for messing up our booking. I'm used to long waits for tables at restaurants with no bookings, but it was bad form to wait this long when we'd booked well in advance.
We were seated in a back room secluded away from the main dining area, and while we felt a bit removed from all the action it was ok because the six of us had lots of catching up to do. The decor inside is great, very 1950s Hong Kong. The food was good. We opted for one of the banquets, and while they had sold out of the duck on our banquet menu by this time (d'oh!) they substituted something else. All very tasty.
The service was hit and miss. I ordered a glass of sparkling wine and pointed to it on the menu, and sparkling water arrived instead. And at one point our whole table was cleared, and then they realised we still had two more main dishes to come and they had to reset the whole table.
Ended up being $65 a head, including drinks, which is fairly reasonable. While there were some slip ups it's nice to find some decent Chinese food in Surry Hills and I'd be willing to give it another go.
