Drenched in bright color and bold imagery, with a fast-paced and energetic atmosphere much like the streets of the Mexico, MEXICO celebrates the vibrant, fresh and lighter side of Mexican cuisine. 

In the eclectic front bar or cosy dining area, moodily lit with dripping candles, MEXICO can accommodate a celebration with friends, or a quick mid-week catch-up. Whatever the occasion, the experience is complemented by smiling staff and the hum of happy diners, helped along by jugs of fruity cocktails, top-shelf tequila and a long list of Mexican beers. 

The food here takes a light and fresh approach to Mexican fare. The flavors are big, spicy and complex: grilled corn on the cob with lime butter; street-style salad and ceviche; and soft tacos filled with pulled pork, grilled fish or skirt steak, topped with house made salsas and slaws, and peppery mayonnaise spiced with jalape�??�?�±o and chipotle.

The drinks keep the vibe loud and lively, with jugs of sangria and magaritas, including unusual variations such as watermelon and Tamarind, and Mexican twists on classic cocktails. And it�?�¢??s all served at prices that will leave diners plenty of change to carry on their night, or come back for more later in the week.

    It was a rainy night and I wanted a quick bite with friends. We ran into Mexico and were warmly greeted by the host and shown to a seat. The atmosphere was great, funky and lots of chatter from the other patrons all having a great time sitting around large wooden tables and benches.The staff are dressed in colorful outfits, adorned with flower's in their hair, Frida Kahlo
    style. We ordered a few soft shelled tacos and they were amazing! Tasty morsels of chicken, prawn, and interesting accompaniments that formed a party in my mouth... Needless to say we ordered more tacos... Pretty sure we tried them all! Come try it! I'll be here again...

    Formerly District Dining (which we also loved), MEXICO is Warren Turnbull's newest venture after roaring success in... wait for it... Auckland.

    My husband and I popped in just before Christmas when we were in the area. We came for lunch on a Saturday without any booking and it didn't seem like we would have needed one. There was hardly anyone there when it opened (at noon), but it did pick up toward the end of our meal. The staff were relaxed but friendly and helped us with our order.

    We ordered margaritas, almost every soft taco they had on the menu (including a salmon taco special that was available that day), the fried chicken, the prawn quesadilla and the ceviche and had a grand ol' time in the balcony area. If you think that sounds like too much food for two people, you're probably right. We were completely stuffed and probably didn't need the last two dishes we ordered - the ceviche and the quesadilla, both of which were larger than expected.

    We loved the relaxed vibe on the balcony, especially on a nice day, and will definitely be back with the gang in tow.

    Favourite items on the menu? Um... the sauteed salmon taco, the fried chicken, and the ceviche. Oh, and the margaritas.
