Tuesday is parma night at this Irish pub, so, in keeping with my eternal search for the perfect chicken parmigiana that doesn?t cost the earth, I set off with a fellow schnitzel lover. The Mighty Quinn is a typical pub-grub establishment, complete with varnished wooden chairs and tables, a scuffed parquetry floor, extraordinarily long bar, and a big screen in the corner. There?s a green carpeted dining section at the entrance, but otherwise it?s not immediately obvious that this place is linked to the Emerald Isle.
But we weren?t there for the decor, we were there for the food. Grabbing a couple of menus from the orders counter (there?s no table service), we were amused to see they were fashioned after a tabloid newspaper, with the cheeky title Mighty Quinn Daily Wipe. We ordered the Tuesday chicken parma special and decided to try another traditional fave, the beef and Guinness pie. Nothing was going to complement the meal better than a couple of Guinnesses, so we trotted back to the bar for some black medicine. With few punters around, being a Tuesday, the atmosphere was lacking but the bar service was speedy. Unfortunately, the food didn?t arrive so quickly. We had well and truly emptied our glasses before it did, but the wait was forgotten as we marvelled at the size of the parma, taking up a good half of the plate, as it should. The juicy schnitzel was tender and thick, not wafer-thin and cardboard tough as it can be elsewhere. And it had a delicious layer of bacon, salsa and well-melt...
