Mixed Business is a prime example of a modern dumpster chic interior.
Growing up far from Melbourne's leafy suburbs, a milk bar was somewhere Alex and his Droogs went to knock back drug-laced moo juice in A Clockwork Orange. The corner shops or mixed businesses trading in chocolate milk and double-barrelled packs of Winnie Blues I found here were rather less exciting. Or they were, until Melbourne cafe-nistas starting taking them over to create cafe latte-cum-sausage-roll dens such as Jerry's Milk Bar in Elwood, Cowderoy Diary or A Minor Place. This trend continues apace in Clifton Hill and neighbouring Northcote. Somewhat ironically, however, although Clifton Hill's Mixed Business is called "Mixed Business", it was previously a furniture restorers. Still that's not stopped owners Lauren Bieber and Tom Crowe from bolting ancient cafe advertising placards (unearthed in the Bendigo tip's recycle centre) to the walls.
