From acorns large oak trees grow and such is the case with The Oaks Hotel, a majestic and historic pub established in 1885. Have a beer in the public bar or head upstairs to the nineteenthirtysix bar, which draws upon Art Deco interior design styles. Serving a range of cocktails, wines and spirits, this is the more chic part of this Neutral Bay establishment. Meanwhile, there are two restaurants at which you can dine; the casual steakhouse and the more sophisticated gourmet pizza restaurant.

The Oaks is a north shore institution, and for good reason: there’s something here for everyone. Enjoy mussels and gourmet pizza in the vast fairylit beer garden or cook your own slab of cow indoors at the Steak House. Downstairs, the Art Deco nineteenthirtysix bar is popular with a younger crowd, while upstairs a rabbit warren of private rooms offers pool tables and jukeboxes. And there’s a bus stop at the door to carry you home afterwards. What more could you want?

This venerable North Shore institution has been around since 1885.
How long should you wait for someone on a first date? Half an hour? Forty-five minutes? I give the fiery chanteuse a whole hour before realising I've been stood up. In serious need of some comfort I decide to head to the Oaks to soothe my rejected soul. After all, this venerable North Shore institution has been around since 1885; surely that stability must provide some reassurance. The question is, in which of its five bars should I seek solace? There's the art deco Nineteenthirtysix, a cocktail bar that faces the street; there's the futuristic-looking bar off the courtyard that looks like a set from A Clockwork Orange; the Garden Palace Bar, which feels more like an average pub (albeit one with stained-glass lights above the bar counter); the Cue and Cushion bar on the first level with room after room of pool tables and chesterfield sofas; as well as the Steakhouse, which also has a separate section upstairs for pokies and smokers.
