One Sunday not too long ago, my friend and I were heading to see a band in Balmain. I was feeling a little worse for wear though and was not sure if I could face a heaving pub. Deciding that we needed good, hearty food, we headed to Pastizzi on King Street instead. I had heard many good things about this place but it was my first time actually eating here. Oh my goodness, so good! The place was buzzing. It is fairly narrow with the tables running down the right-hand side as you walk in and the counter running down the length of the left-hand side with lots of cool art adorning the walls. We were lucky enough to get a table down near the back and we were quickly served by a lovely lady, who seeing that I was clearly suffering from the night before, was happy to recommend some menu options. I settled on the home-made ravioli with a creamy tomato sauce. It was heaven on a plate. So fresh and so tasty. The coffee was also great. We were so full that we couldnt even indulge in any of the sweet treats but I will be heading back very soon to do just that. Especially with winter around the corner this would be the perfect place to settle in for some good comfort food.

this place gets to hold two valued titles; 'BEST coffee in newtown' and 'CHEAPEST coffee in newtown'. The staff are all so friendly, and all share a passion for their flakey, delicious pastrys. They run around this quaint lil' corridor with a smile and a happiness to showcase this cafes delights. Local artists' work adorn the walls of this place. Truly, this place has become an institution among locals. great stuff. Unrivalled coffee, Delicious pastizzi, huge range, and so so inexpensive.

In sun-drenched island-idyll decor, all the classics are here.

In the early 1950s, Lenny Ferro's "Uncle Joe" and "Uncle Leli" ran a little cafe in Crown Street, feeding Maltese churchgoers on freshly baked pastizzi and oversized Maltese-style ravioli. The face of the place for more than 40 years, Leli is long gone and while his original shop still operates under new owners, its signature Maltese Cross now gleams in fire-engine red outside a sparkling, white-washed cafe in Newtown, where Ferro and his team put their Crown Street baking lessons to good use. In sun-drenched island-idyll decor, all the classics are here - ricotta, pea, spinach and cheese - plus an extraordinary selection of new-style stuffings, sweet and savoury. Chocolate and ricotta, cheese and cherry, anyone? How about vegie curry, bacon and egg or Nonna's lentils? At $1.60 each (or $10 for a takeaway frozen dozen) the pastizzi are fat, flaky and satisfyingly filling. Uncle Leli would be proud.
