Payal doesn't quite hit Indian paydirt but it's a key player in one of Melbourne's alluring multicultural enclaves.
Melbourne folk don't have everything. Not all of us have a train station or tram stop within easy reach. Most of us are not within easy reach of a nightclub if, at 2am, we feel like jiving. Some deprived sods can't even get a soy latte at the local shops. But happily, just about all of us have chicken korma within cooee of home: we are very well sorted for Indian restaurants. If you're in Melbourne's outer-south-east, the offerings go way beyond curries and crisp pappadums. Bollywood DVDs, iridescent sweets, fancy saris and a dozen types of chickpea flour are all available within a short tramp of Dandenong train station. The City of Greater Dandenong even runs cultural tours of its Little India (next tour July 4; call 9239 5100 for details) and each walking tour concludes with a meal at Payal, one of a number of modest but popular Indian restaurants in the area.
