Having read cafeworker's review I was torn about how to review Pearl. They do fantastic food and have a range of mouth-watering goodies in addition to the menu, but I agree the service is not compelling. Then again, it's a bit of a cross between a cafe/restaurant where you expect that sort of service and an order-at-the-counter cafe in which you're happy grabbing food yourself. As for the atmosphere, it's a stark setting, with a warehousy feel (high roofs, tin, concrete floor etc.) but I don't mind that. So the service could be improved, but the food and coffee are great.

Extremely disappointing service. Pearl cafe doesn't belong in Richmond - it had zero atmosphere and no character - the staff seemed to forget their job involved service and thought they were better than the customers. I like to find new cafes to do some work from, so I thought I would test out pearl cafe. After I finished my coffee I was asked if I was going to eat lunch - I said I would but not yet. so I was told in no uncertain terms people who are eating lunch (i.e paying more)need to sit in my seat. Very unfortunate that the staff don't understand the value of a customer - if the service had been better- I would have happily stayed for lunch and potentially eaten and worked from there 3 times per week.

Pearl Cafe is a hugely valuable and welcome addition to an under-served corner of Richmond.

It's taken a year, but Geoff Lindsay's Pearl Cafe has finally opened some 400 metres up Church Street from his fancy fine diner. The light, airy corner space is painted white and dominated by a high communal white table lined with stools. The old tables and chairs from Pearl help it from feeling too clinical - despite the use of laboratory glassware and those beaker-like Riedel stemless wine glasses. Much thought has obviously gone into styling the look here, from drinks coasters and the suavely branded take-away packaging to the charcoal-cardboard scabbards sheathing cutlery on the tables and the matching heavy bowls. Could this be the first Aussie return of that '80s dining icon - the black plate? Only thing seemingly overlooked was properly spring-loading the front door. It kept blowing open and didn't shut automatically when the barn-born entered or left. That's pretty tedious - and cold - for those sitting nearest the door.
