Pellegrini's Espresso Bar has been serving dinners of Melbourne since the 1950s. If you pull up a stool expect a hearty size of pasta and lasagne. These home cooked meals are not for the faint hearted. The authentic Italian food is unpretentious. If you are attending the theatre or a show then Pellegrini's is conveniently located for you. If it is great coffee or a hearty meal you're looking for then Pellegrini's can satisfy.
Coffee? Italians do it better. Pellegrini?s has been doing it for over 50 years. Peek out back for a glimpse of what?s simmering on the stove for lunch, just maybe minestrone...

I went in for a coffee, wound up having dinner seduced by all the good smells. Pellegrini's is an icon in Melbourne and service is prompt. It's busy and not a fussy/fancy place. Great place for lunch or dinner or a quick coffee. The granita reminds me of when I was a kid! :)
Initially, I wanted to eat something sweet, but the cakes on display looked way too scary for me. I ended up ordering a Lasagna which obviously was the wrong choice.
It was served as a indistinguishable mesh with cheap Parmesan on top. The pasta was soggy and the sauce void of any herbs or spices. I can prepare a better lasagna at home where I don't have to endure the atmosphere of this smelly place.
I also had some melon drink, but that was nothing to write home about.
Every foodie in Melbourne comes to Pellegrini's at least once in their lifetime. Its really all about the history and the atmosphere. Sure , the food is good and the staff are rude. Its supposed to be like that but the star is the place itself. It hasn't changed for years. Its a rare piece of Melbourne old school and I love it. Make sure you have the lasagne and the fruit drink and ask to sit in the kitchen ( they might let you - its where those in the know go)
You can't go past Melbourne without venturing into this fine little establishment. Family-owned, serving traditional Italian food in a family-oriented setting, you feel right at home (or in Italy!). Their granita is sensational - perfect with a plate of lasagna or spaghetti. Perfect place to dine with friends or have a quick bite to eat. Definitely top of the list!!
cheap and cheerful- great to drop in for a hearty meal on the run, don't expect finesse, but this is a hell of a lot better than all the generic chain/franchised cafes popping up... oh and yeah it is a Melbourne institution
An institution in Melbourne, I have been eating here since I was a little girl, introduced by my uncle who is a food connoisseur, so that says a lot! I still love the granitas, service is polite and not overbearing. No table menus, the menu hangs overhead. Coffee delightful.Pasta traditional style - what more can I say?
