PHD is one of many Vietnamese restaurants in Marrickville that are getting frequented by a lot of customers. The restaurant has a limited space with just enough room for tables and chairs and passageways, but not enough to make you feel comfortable. The red-laden ambiance which I suppose would give the restaurant its Asian atmosphere makes the shop feel even smaller.

I was brought to this restaurant by my friend. A lot of people there ordered their pho (noodle soup), but we decided to venture out a bit and had their tomato rice with two dishes from the menu. We ordered the chicken omelette and a fried eggplant. The omelette was quite alright but the eggplant was quite salty and was very soggy, like it was taken out of the fridge and reheated. Both the dishes were highly flavoured that would make you thirst for quite some time.

The rice also came last and we actually had to ask for it before it came. The rice was very lumpy and was definitely not fresh.

Those dishes weren't so cheap either, and we regretted we didn't stay on the safe side of just buying the noodle soup. Perhaps they might have been really good at just exactly that like everyone here said.
  • Think this place is trading as PHD same as the other on Marrickville Rd. Food is great I enjoy it for a casual after work dinner when I don't feel like cooking.
The staff are really nice and remembered me from a previous time when I left my jacket there.

  • When I visit Marrickville, this place is top of mind. And when I sit down at the table, the only thing I will order is the Ph Beef Special. You can't go wrong with Ph from PHD (Pho Bac Hai Duong). This place is crowded every weeknight while the other nearby restaurants are empty (not to say that the other restaurants are bad, but that this place is at the top of their game).
  • Tried their 'Medium Rare Pho Dai' small today and apart from it being as pricey as 'Pho An' from Bankstown, everything else went down hill from there. The soup was not hot, the meat was dry, old (edges were dark) and well overcooked, the soup was overpowered with fish sauce, couldn't taste much else of that pho herb flavour. A huge let down. I probably went on a bad day but even so, to charge $9 - $13 a bowl I would expect the same consistency as 'Pho An'.

I can't say whether this is the best Pho place in Marrickville - because it's the only place I've been (about 10 times!). With $10 Pho that's as fresh as anything - you'll keep coming back too.Very old school, hole in the wall - but worth it!

There's plenty of options on the menu but I've only had the pho. Liked it so much we went back twice over the weekend. A flavoursome broth filled with noodles and beef - you get a lot for the very low price. If you prefer vego or seafood pho they have you covered. Not a flash joint but who really cares when something tastes this good.
