Went for a Sunday lunch using a Living Social voucher and really enjoyed our meal. For drinks we had iced coffees which were made fresh with a shot of espresso and served sugar free. The veal parmigiana consisted of veal mini-steaks with lavish home-made marinara sauce, grilled eggplant and melted mozzarella cheese. Very yummy indeed! My husband had the grilled barramundi which was also very nice. Both mains were served on a bed of steamed broccoli and carrots with a couple of potato wedges. Well presented, fresh and tasting great. The service was speedy and attentive.
Only negative was perhaps the seating as it felt a bit cramped, with too many tables very near one another and 2 rows of seats, with one row perched on a slightly raised platform. Not much room to move around. We were lucky it was quiet at 2pm. having said that, most other restaurants around there seemed to be equally "cramped".
Will definitely recommend.
I've been eating at Renato's for over 20 years and have never had a bad meal. I love the relaxed atmosphere, the fact the owners are there to offer a smile and say hi, and the food comes out quickly and is delicious. I even had my 1st date with my husband of 16+ years there! The Balmain bugs are definitely a favourite, and being BYO and having the bottle shop next door is a bonus. Our kids love the food too, and it caters for large groups as well as a romantic dinner for 2.
I have been eating at Renato's for years, and always found it a really good experience. Today was no different. I went with a friend - he had the tempura fish, which he really enjoyed, while I had a simple but very satisfying spag bol. The service was friendly and quick. There were not many people there (it was about 2pm) but the chef came out to chat to us and our waitress was friendly, attentive and efficient. I am delighted that this will be the first review people read, rather than the unfortunate review below by svf. I can only say that, from my experience, he was terribly unlucky.
I was absolutely dissapointed and appalled at the dinner my partner and I ate tonight - Valentines Day 2011... absolutely horrible. The octopus, listed on the Menu as BBQ'd with Garlic and Chilli, was disgusting. It was purple and had been previously FROZEN, so was extroadinarily TOUGH. It tasted yucky and had no hint of marinade - imagine eating octupus cooked directly from the deepfreeze - can you imagine how bland and tough it would taste...? Exactly...
The Oysters Fitzpatrick were dried... I know that restaurants cook oysters when they are old to use them all up, but this takes things to a new level - someone must have forgotten to tell them to remove them from the hotplate - they were so hard I could not recognise if they were 'smoked oysters' or fresh... truly, they did noy managed to disguise the taste of the old oysters (and I hate to say this as I ate 6 due to pure 'starvation') and turn them into something that tasted like it had just been removed from the tin...
The Tasmanian Scallops were delicious, however, by the time I had eaten the previous 2 entrees I was seriously concerned about being ill.
By the time the main meal arrived, I was over it. I had two bites of my 'Mexicana' pizza and nearly vomited at the table, it tasted like the pepperoni had been sprayed with surface spray, like 'Spray and Wipe'. I was so disgusted by the previous 2 courses that I had to complain again to someone - who was VERY UNHELPFUL, that I wanted a sample to "... take to a Food Inspector", as I was dry retching at the table. Do you remember in the old days in Highschool when you used to have disect rats and they were stored in the freezer? Do you recall the smell of the horrible chemicals that used to stink when the rat's were disected? I can tell you, that is exactly what my pizza tasted like .... and here I am on Coogee Bay Road dry retching at my table.
I have never eaten such 'strong' repugnant food in my life, and to think that they charge such EXORBITANT prices...!
On the other hand, my partner would eat anything lifted out of a garbage truck, so he enjoyed the Spaghetti Marinara... it was truly awful having to sit across the table watching him 'tuck-in' so to speak. However, even HEEEEE couldn't handle the taste of the octopus, oysters and pizza. So there you go, they used to be fantastic 20 years ago, unfortunately the GOODWILL took off with the implementation of the renovations, some 15 years ago.
One word of thanks, the owner insisted on only charging us for the food that we ate, so out of a total bill for approximately $150, we were only charged $38. I think it was brilliant of him to 'do the right thing', however, it was quite embarrassing carrying on with the 2 staff in front of my next door neighbour who happened to walking down the street at the time.
I advise anyone out there to avoid this place like the plague and go somewhere else. They charge very high prices, so why not head there instead of trying the local place in Coogee, which is a Ripoff. I asked the staff for a sample of the pizza and they refused to give it to me - perhaps that is why we were only charged us for the 2 dishes my partner ate.
I have just dry-retched AGAIN in the toilet they certainly got it wrong with this customer.
Have been going here on and off for 5 years. Never had a bad meal in there yet. Wait staff can sometimes seem standoffish depending on who you get but the food is always excellent
Absolutely loved the Balmain bugs!! I had to order more and more bread just to soak up the left over sauce. I have come to Renato's quite a few times and have loved all the mains I have ordered. Service is prompt, and their coffees are great. Now that I have moved in the area I will continue to come on a regular basis.
What a fantastic spot! The service was excellent as was the coffee. There was a geat deal to chose from off the menu and the prices are indeed value for money. We will certainly be going back....this has just become my new local restaurant .
food was ok but service was absolutely shocking. took a friend there from overseas to show him coogee and was very embarrassed by the unprofessional waiting staff. this unacceptable service seems to be consistent with other reviews i've read, and clearly management does not care at all. i can't and won't ever recommend this restaurant.
This place was ok. We got a waiter that must have been having a bad day. But hey, hopefully it got better for him :) The food was ok - the eggs seemed a bit under cooked, but overall presentation and the taste of everything else was fine.
