My wife and myself used our voucher for dinner.
The staff a little unfriendly.
We told them we were using our voucher they then returned with a description of what we can have . Mains desert and a glass of wine , only the one desert was to be shared between us so we didnt bother with desert.
We found our mains tasteless .
Then my wife had a glass of wine , I decided to have a beer .
So they charged me for the beer although a glass of wine was included , thought they could have substuted.
We had a garlic bread for entree and as we declined desert , thought they may have swapped the entree for desert , but they didnt .
I thought they would have gone out of their way to promote their restaraunt with the voucher but found the opposite.
Not going back
Just as the reviewer before me stated, I am also by no means a food snob!! I am generally quite easily pleased.
I ordered a penne with basil pesto, sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts in a white sauce. I recieved a bowl of pasta with a tomato base and pine nuts. I queried the waiter as to the appearance of the dish and the fact that the sauce was indeed red and perhaps I had received the wrong dish. The staff was a gentleman to whom english was clearly a second language and he confirmed that yes this is in fact the dish I ordered. The manger or owner noticed the confusion and entered the discussion and upon realising the mix up, admitted the mistake made by the chef and apologised and took the meal away from me. Not more than 5 minutes later, much to my delight (as I thought Id be waiting at least another 20 minutes for my selected dish to be prepared) my chosen dish was presented. It indeed appeared to be in a white sauce and looked like the dish I requested. It was, to put it nicely, TERRIBLE. It was simply pasta with a cup of cream poured over the top and some green herb throughout and a few pine nuts and sundried tomatoes thrown on top. There was no flavour WHATSOEVER! I requested extra parmesan for flavour as it honestly just tasted like cream poured over pasta!
My fellow diners also received average meals, though none as tasteless as mine.
Before reading this please note that i am by NO MEANS a food snob.
Great value online voucher purchased for this restaurant.
First of all, this restaurant needed the voucher for advertising. This is a place you would barely notice when driving or even walking down Bridge Rd, being at the very east of the busy street.
Needless to say, if it wasn't for the voucher we would not know this place existed.
The conditions of the voucher was $35 for 2 mains, 2 desserts and 2 glasses of wine, the wine of which had to be under the $8 per glass range.
We had purchased 2 vouchers for a group of four.
We ordered our 4 main meals, one each, all of which were barely touched.
In total, the main meals ordered where, 1 fried Calamari with salad, 1 Linguine Marinara (served with Penne pasta may I add), 1 Lasagna - both these pasta dishes were noted on the menu as "Chefs recommendations".
I myself ordered a "Special", Risotto with calamari and herb butter.
When the food came out, i didn't recognise my dish as it was completely covered in a tomato base sauce, which to my knowledge had not been noted on the menu. I could taste no trace of the advertised herb butter. The "risotto" tasted like under cooked rice and the large 4 pieces of calamari mixed throughout were rubbery and bland.
On top of this, i found a bonus piece of penne pasta in my dish! Which to me, indicates that they covered my dish with my friends penne (not Linguine) Marinara sauce.
The rubber calamari was in 3 of our 4 mains, and was constantly bad across the table.
Lasagna is a hard dish to beautify, however I have seen prettier slabs in a take away carton then the slop that was placed on my friends plate.
For dessert we only ordered 2 dishes and shared them. Lemon Crepe & Creme Caramel.
The Creme Caramel was unusually served with a scoop of vanilla icing. The Creme Caramel itself looked delicious, but it a had burnt film at the bottom and had an overwhelming taste of marzipan (IE Almond paste).
I didn't have the displeasure of tasting the lemon crepe, (note that the menu offered strawberry which was our choice initially, but we were told strawberries were off the menu that night).
The crepe itself looked under cooked and doughie, and was literally swimming in what my friends claimed to be pure lemon juice, without a sprinkle of icing sugar in sight!
In addition to this meal, 2 glasses of ordinary wine were ordered. Half of the table was not drinking that night and ordered a bottle of sparkling water instead, and despite the fact that the voucher allowed us for 2 extra glasses at no extra cost, they charged us $9 for a bottle of water, when in fact they had already saved $7 by us ordering 1 x water instead of 2 $8 glasses of wine.
Bad tasting food is forgivable yet not forgotten.
I saw that there were other voucher buyers at the restaurant at the same time we were there. I sincerely hope that other patrons are not feeling the same way.
I describe Roberto's Ristorante along Richmond as a regular restaurant with large large amounts of menus to offer. Besides the wide range of pizza and pasta selections, I came to love their Risotto plates. The Risotto Di Mare most specifically has caught my taste buds. With those seafoods in Napoli sauce, my hungry tummy is very much satisfied.
Their sweets are also just as sinful as with their other restaurant menu. The strawberry crepe is a personal favorite. It's so heavenly.
One time I was there with my family. They instantly ordered for that praise-worthy large size Piccante pizza. They enjoyed the spicy aroma of it but all I wanted was the risotto and the crepe. It was funny that I was like an outsider sitting beside them. And it doesn't matter that we choose differently. What matters was that Roberto's has brought us to eat together as families should be. And Roberto's has helped much in maintaining that tradition for us.
If an Italian experience is what you need. Roberto's Ristorante at Richmond is the exciting target. They have this Italia Specials and the aroma of the place itself surely takes you to a short trip to Italy. You'd like the feel of the atmosphere there with families surrounding you as if there's some big celebration going on but really you're all just enjoying something in common. The service time is reasonable quicker than I thought and they never fail to greet you with a smile. I've heard some restaurant information from friends that the owners or chefs make the food and sauces are made from scratch. I had to check it out with my family as we love freshly cooked and prepared meals. The menus have a nice selection of food from pizzas to pastas, risottos and even salads. There's a variety of drinks too. Our large family's favorite includes the Piccante pizza in large size of course that yummy spicy taste that runs inside you even before eating it. My siblings enjoy their Calamari Fritti much like they've never had one. We even had to bring some take away food to bring home and extend the fun.
When I set out to visit Melbourne restaurants and write reviews, I vowed not to post a reviews that was negative, but this place may be the exception to my rule. I had to try this place twice as I couldn't believe it could be so bad. The first visit was on a Friday and the restaurant wasn't that busy but the service was extremely poor however the food was average but acceptable. We went back two Fridays later, and the meals were inedible but the staff attitude was a little better. I would not recommend Roberto's Pizzeria. Lisa
