The Hood has gradually been freshened up in the past four years, but thankfully its character has been retained.
Maybe it's the carpet, or it could be the toffee walls, or chocolate-coloured leather lounges and low, golden lighting; whatever it is, the Robin Hood Hotel is as welcoming as an open fire on this icy Wednesday night. Peeling off coats and scarves, we are forced to do a lap of the bustling bar to find a spare seat. All but two stools are taken as the casually dressed eastern suburbs crowd settles in for dinner and a few drinks. We perch ourselves at the window bench and peruse the value-for-money menu. It's hard to go past the braised lamb shank on garlic mash with wilted spinach ($12), and hubby opts for the "Made in the Hood" chicken schnitzel with tomato relish and, you guessed it, garlic mash ($7). The kitchen is also doing a brisk trade in $6 rump steaks. Trivia night was on Monday, but tonight it's jackpot joker and the popular video jukebox is getting a workout.
