Finally, a pub that knows it's a pub! In this day and age it's not uncommon to go to the local pub and feel slightly out your depth when looking at the menu... Braised quail or some other ridiculous meal. But not here at the Rose Bay Hotel. They keep it simple and the steady flow of people is an indication that it's well received. It's a classic menu which takes me back to my childhood lunches and pubs at the pub with my parents... burgers, schnitzels and a pasta. Bravo.
I had the burger for lunch and although it wasn't a gourmet, five star burger with exotic chutney and radicchio, it was a good size and came with some of the best chips this side of city!
The train that runs around the ceiling gives it a cosy, family friendly atmosphere although I would like to see it used more practically... say, for the transporting or beers and/or meals.
Located in one of the nicest suburbs of Sydney but you wont need to take out a second mortgage just for lunch. It's not up itself like so many watering holes these days and for that reason, I'll be back. Not for a special celebration, but I will be back.
A pub mainly for old regulars one would think. After ordering our meals I went to the bar the purchase a few ciders. The pub was far from busy and I waited too long to be served. Regulars are most certainly looked after first.
Relatively old decor and far too many televisions. My meal was nice - but you would expect that for the price. I had the pumpkin ravioli. At $19.50 it was a good size portion but fairly basic flavours. A friend of mine had the chicken burger, it came with a decent serving of chips. The Burger was far from gourmet - comprising of a chicken breast, a slice of cheese and a few lettuce leaves. Fairly disappointing.
However, our meals were served quickly and the plates cleared in the same timely fashion. Not a bad choice of pub for a hot day. You could potentially sit there all day in the airconditioned comfort if there was a sporting clash you wanted to watch.
Three of us went - we ordered two of the specials and one off the standard menu... let me begin: 1. Special - Duck with Hokkien noodles. Well, now I know what happens to those rubber duckies when the army is finished with them - yup, they're sliced up and served at the Rose Bay. Could barely get my teeth into it. 2. Special - Salt and Pepper Calamari. This was no soft and spicy rings served here. Man, this was fist sized balls of truck tyre - unbelievably, even tougher than the duck. I reckon this baby was fighting sperm whales before it was dragged to shore, and thrown into the deep fryer! 3. Hamburger and chips. The meat smelt funny... and barely tasted like beef at all. It was either cooked in old oil, or it was made from some exotic animal yet to make it onto the taxonimic pyramid. None of us finished our meal. My view, the pub is great, and they need to lift their game in the kitchen or forget about doing meals at all. I'll be back... but just for a drink!
The RBH is a comfortable pub with pretty good food, plenty of screens to watch the footy and a good mix of patrons from the local area.
But some staffs attitude is woeful. It never seems like there's anyone in charge and the high turnover has resulted in staff not caring. This isn't true of all - some of the bar staff are polite without being overly friendly.
This place would be packed every night of the week if they could sort out these issues. Nobody wants to be fawned over, but a friendly smile would be appreciated.
The lighting could be dimmer and there could definitely be more atmosphere but its alright for a quick and easy pub meal. Prices are upped due to location though. They do have specials on certain weeknights and trivia is fun on Tuesdays from 7.30pm!
The only pub in Rose Bay so there's not a lot of choice. It's an ok pub, the food is alright if you like things deep-fried or steaks, the drinks are relatively cheap. It's kind of downmarket, it's a bit of an old mans pub. There are about 4 TVs that are constantly blaring sports... there's a naff train set that goes around the roof of the pub... the trivia night is alright!
