Away from Darling St you'll find the Royal Oak - part pub, part restaurant. Probably the only bar in Sydney where I've been brave enough to try the oysters - they were good. It's main claim to fame though are the ribs - big and messy. There's an upstairs with an outdoors area and a couple of couches but this is more of a pub where people come to eat. In fact the front bar is quite small, and usually empty when I'm there. There's an extensive wine list so you'll have no trouble finding the perfect drop to match your food.

I've lived in Sydney for 20 years and have been been over to Balmain from the Eastern Suburbs heaps of times, especially now with the Cross City Tunnel making life so much easier and it amazes me when I find a new, previously unseen area that has been under my nose.

We all know Darling Street Balmain but venture a little bit further off the main road and you get a quiet, very local, almost hidden part of Balmain and with a rather fantastic pub called The Royal Oak. It's a small pub by Sydney standards and its had the chrome and polished wooden floor makeover that all pubs eventually get.

I went with a group of friends with many babies and it was all good.we were loud. It was no problem. The babies were loud. It was no problem. It may have been a bit different on a Saturday nigth rather than a Tuesday night though! The food, although it took ages to arrive and at different times, was above average. Strangely for a small, local pub, some of the restaurant staff had real attitude but the bar staff were friendly and helpful. Its a relaxed environment and my recommendation woould be to order your food and eat in the bar. Well worth a visit.

Great local pub with quality food. Has a great mix of pub & class restaurant. Though the chairs & tables in the dining room are a bit uninviting.
