    Chaotic, friendly and eccentric, this bar makes even a lone drinker feel at home.

    A gig like this generally guarantees an endless supply of plus-ones (and twos, threes, fours . . .), which also makes sampling the entire drinks menu far easier. If you are accompanied by a tag-team of pals, then almost any dive can be as homely as your front porch. What's more impressive is a bar that can make the lone drinker feel less like a sad outcast and more like part of the family. Enter North Melbourne's Rrose. After pacing up and down Errol Street for a few minutes in search of Rrose (and even trying to rope in a local friend who was more excited about getting a frozen apple pie than playing barfly), I found myself standing out the front. Another of those fashionably understated bay-window facades - the hanging sign features nothing but an old-fashioned illustrated hand pointing "here, idiot" - gives way to a front bar that is simultaneously warm and airy. Various types of wooden furniture are scattered across the kind of terrazzo flooring not seen since Mrs Madge Sm...
