Seddon is a little white enclave, a little nodule attached to the multicultural raffishness of Footscray. But you will never see these people in Footscray, except sometimes at the Master restaurant on their birthdays, not even in Brunswick St or Sydney Rd, the extent of their adventurousness is neighboring Yarraville. Seddon is all singles, mostly, the sort of people who will hook up with someone in a whine bar or coffee snot, hang with them for a couple of years then marry and move out whoop whoop to Borogrove or Panfryeia where they can fuck in peace and have kids, they have a car so they don't ever have to deal with the Bogles at the railway station, they do all their shopping at Fountain Gate or some other Godawful hole, then when the kids have flown away to inner Melbourne despising their parent's values they will move to Scone, Bendigo, somewhere like that, grow flowers in the garding and gather in caffee clashes and complain how their children never visit them.

So Seddon is about 2/3 wine bars and coffee places -every business tries to fit a coffee table in the corner, even places like industrial bearings wholesalers, just because your machines need bearings doesn't mean you can't drink coffee, after all you come from Melbourne, and Sabroso is one of the most upmarket of these. Basically modern Italianiate decor, stone bar, friendly helpful staff, black leather sofas, wood, chrome, big outdoor area partly under cover with wooden tables with slats, it's not expensive furniture, looks like more than it is, gimme about two dozen, I am your cousin's brother-in-law. The beer and wine menu tries a little harder - not house red at $5.50 but Coonawarra 2008 Shiraz at $9, the beer is Spanish, the gin is Hendricks, the brandy San Remo, bit better all round. The bar menu is mostly 'to share' - that means really small plates of very fancy Calamares and stuff for like $14. I had the pork belly, apple and pear confit stewed in sweet sherry ($14, but they undercharged me because they liked my hat) , you eat all of the small pieces of pork before realising that the other 7 pieces of stuff are apple, but it's good, it's what you expect. The girls who come here won't waste money on meals when they could cook at home, but they will split a plate of some really romantic fancy nibbles with friends, that's what it's all about - they don't want to spend more than $6 each on food, they want to spend that on wine, there are a couple of $32 steakey things for the guys who can cook (two things) but don't cook at home unless they have a girl over.

So the crowd is mostly 27-37 singles - skinny guys by themselves or in pairs with white shirts and dark slacks, work clothes, plump girls who went home first and changed into black dresses, in groups of three since with girls it's important to be able to gang up on one another, that is if no guy comes over, and these guys won't because they have no social skills with women, the allegiances are always changing, never know when you are going to be the victim for the night, anyway the third girl is always more beautiful, nobody ever goes to the loo by themselves because the others will talk about her while she's away. These girls all probably have last names like Extremos or Indecesin, because the families that rent out the houses - the first generation of Seddon migrants, the Bulldogs supporters, the ones who have retired and moved to Bendigo - all have these names too and will automatically pick tenants with names like their own. I didn't see any of the guys approach any of the chicks while I was there.

So basically, Sopresso is for the sort of people who are in the lower-paid tier of administrative or semi-professional jobs, who want to pay enough to keep out the riff-raff but not more, who want things nice, who will happily budget $100/n (guys) or $50/n (chicks) for their Friday or Saturday night out. It's nice. If you are a player who knows how to talk to women you could make a killing here.

has good food that is not too pricey; can be noisy when full due to the polished concrete floors.

Seddon's Sabroso could be a suburban poster child for the "bar-does-food" phenomenon.

Minister Helen Coonan has suggested that reality television programs be prohibited from broadcasting material presenting participants in a highly demeaning or exploitative manner. Obviously it's a magnificently sensitive idea - even if it does take away the whole point of much reality TV. I just trust that the minister in charge of pubs, clubs and bars is taking note; surely he (or she) must enforce the same restrictions. I've lost track of the number of times the words "highly demeaning" and "exploitative" have been used about my behaviour after a night out. Nip this in the bud before the wowser lobby starts rashly campaigning to ban flaming sambuccas or rum 'n' cokes after midnight! Maybe the solution lies in the fact that bars are also becoming a source of good food. There's only one way to find out - I'll set out to see if eating while drinking ensures more mature behaviour. It's time for an experiment. Seddon's Sabroso could be a suburban poster child for the "bar-does...
