I'd been wanting to come here for some time, but kept forgetting about it until my husband booked it in for my birthday. I had a bad run getting to the restaurant and was caught out in the rain, so I wasn't really in the right frame of mind when we started dinner.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm and preoccupation over how wet my hair was, my mood turned pretty quickly after I realised how lovely and inviting the staff were. Unlike what a previous reviewer mentioned below, they did ask us if we wanted still or sparkling water and offered to start us off with a drink or cocktail.

I was surprised at how large the restaurant is, and how many little private rooms there were. The crowd was a mix of tourists, couples and groups. It was a little on the noisy side, but we were seated on the side, in the sunken tables and away from the larger groups.

We started off with a giant bowl of edamame and wine, and ordered six other dishes between us. We went with some of the signature dishes like the prawn shumai and kingfish jalapeno, as well as some others that came recommended by the waiters - the tempura scampi, sashimi tacos, wagyu tartare and the most surprising of them all, the gindara saikyo-yaki - a miso marinated cod - a beautifully cooked fillet of fish.

As someone who's a little over fine dining, I am in love with this place. Great food, casual, fun, and not stuck up. The question is, why haven't I come sooner?

Great food, some inconsistent attitude of the staff, and far too expensive. Some very interesting and delightful taste combinations, and the winelist is ok. However the NOBU style and occassional stuck up service staff are a bit much. I will be back but not as often as I would if they got their pricing under control.

I love to eat out and have rarely had as disappointing experience as I had at Sake last night. Our group of five was taken into one of their small group dining rooms and we were excited by the layout, meticulously organised place settings and the elaborate bamboo lampshade. Then we saw how filthy it was, absolutely covered in dust. Not really a big deal but that was what began our night. We all had the banquet - 88 dollars a head and began with the kingfish which was lovely but you walk in there hungry and wind up fighting over slivers of sashimi. The potato cakes with Wasabi mayo were fine as were the lettuce cups you just can't make a meal out of these mouthfuls. The popcorn shrimp was ok though one of our group thought it was pretty ordinary. The beef teryaki with buckwheat was again adequate but just had no flavour. I love Japanese cuisine and could live on it. But compared to our cheap local Bento dinner this was just much ado about nothing! Molecularly small dishes with dribbles of sake machined gunned at you in a noisy, slightly grubby environment. You know what you are paying and are desperately trying to enjoy it but the next day you just felt let down. I had a lump in my throat as we laid out the cash and thought of how better we could have spent our 544 dollars. Save yourself the trouble and find a sushi train!

The food was different then a normal Japanese restaurant. Small tasty bite size peices not satisfying to fill an empty stomach. Our waiter knew his stuff on what to order, he looked after us well. The only disappointing experience there was the welcoming enterance, two stuck up hostess staff did not greet us not even a hello or a smile, just a long face with no mannners. What's the point of of having hostess at the enterance when they don't greet you? Very disappointed!

At the risk of going against the current trend I would like to say how terribly disappointed I was with the whole Sake dining experience. We were greeted at the door by very brusque person with serious attitude. We were shown to a very ordinary table and we were not even given the option of good ole sydney tap water. Our still water cost us $8.00! Our lovely waitress did explain the menu and we did have really nice kingfish sashimi and the Sake signature dish of tuna, salmon and kingfish tartare. All lovely . But the popcorn shrimp was awful and the miso eggplant tasted like leather. In fact we were so concerned that it was inedible that we politely asked our waitress if it was meant to be so tough. She said ..no definitely not. She went and spoke to "chef" who came back with the very abrupt reply of ...that's what it's meant to be like. Surely not! I have had gorgeous eggplant at first class Japanese restaurants worldwide and so I know you are not to have eggplant that bites like leather. Anyway...sadly the whole experience was very disappointing and cost a lot of money. $165.00 for two poeple and we had no wine. I don't think it deserves all of the accolades it is receiving.

Authentic setting that makes you forget you're in the heart of old Sydney. The food is amazing (we had the banquet) and well-paced. Service is outstanding and we were well looked after. If I had the budget of the previous reviewer, I too would be going back frequently!

Amazing experience. The food was fresh and authentic, much like what you'd find in the upmarket restaurants of Tokyo. We sat at the sushi bar and saw Shaun work his magic. The kitchen had a good vibe and the chefs seemed genuinely happy to be there. The service was friendly and efficient. I will be going back regularly.

Sake, sushi and sashimi are buzzwords on Sydney’s food scene. Head to Sake in The Rocks for the best of all three. Shaun Presland’s team gives you a hearty Japanese welcome, yelling Irasshaimase from the open kitchen when you walk past. Once they start sending out divine kingfish jalapeno sashimi and nasu miso eggplant, you’ll be calling out big thanks. Try theKozeomon sake tasting but ask for a normal table – getting up from the sunken seats is hard even without the sake.
