Seeking ungarlicked food on Brunswick Street one Saturday evening, my fellow diner and I stopped by San Churro. The array of cakes, chocolates, churros (Spanish Donuts) and other cocoa-based sweet treats was vast and inviting. The staff were attentive and helpful; kindly pointing out which items were spiked with chilli. We ordered some kind of elaborate cake construction to share, with a hardened creme brulee-style top, chocolate layers and amaretto flavouring. It was delicious but astonishingly rich - despite the serving size being realistic, we still could not finish the whole thing. Their iced chocolate drink was not nearly as exquisite as the Spanish hot chocolate that they serve, but delivered what it promised and was great for a hot day. Unfortunately the prices are more exorbitant than I am accustomed to: about $18 for a slice of cake, an iced chocolate and a coffee. The thing that I found most interesting about this San Churro (as compared to the others I have visited) was how it had adapted to the local area. We were asked to move seats to accommodate a laptop-using customer who had run out of battery power - a request I will allow the reader to interpret as either positive or negative depending on their laptop ownership status. Also, it seemed less insular than I had expected - if you are having a philosophical discussion, fellow diners may listen in and wish to contribute! All in all an enjoyable (if expensive) dining experience. I would return to try other chocolate delicacies and recommend San Churro to fans of the cocoa bean.

It was my first time there and we loved it. Great selection and while having chocolate tappas and a milkshake it took me back to places in Malaga and Madrid. Loved the churros. I went at a quiet time and could see it as great place to catch up with friends that is close to home.

Having read the previous review, I will admit I had quite a different experience at 'San Churro' Fitzroy, and as recently as last week. I know nothing of the history of this restaurant, so can't be sure whether it was under different ownership at the time the last review was written, (2 years ago) - but I found the service completely contrary to that stated below. I will concur the restaurant is a little cramped, particularly noticeable on an uncomfortably warm summer day as it was when we visited. In hindsight we should have taken a table out on the street as there really was little air flow to the back of the restaurant. We were served by two staff members, both friendly, accommodating, and generous. We presented certificates previously acquired and they offered us the choice to substitute the hot drinks on the gift certificates for cold milkshakes or iced drinks, if we so chose. This made all the difference in a heatwave, and the generosity will not be forgotten. Trams immediately outside the door and plenty of parking for minimal on-street parking prices. My only suggestion would be that the complimentary water jugs should be maintained with regular ice-cubes in warmer weather.

On a wild and woolly Melbourne winter's day, nothing beats the warmth and flavour of a hot San Churro Azteca hot chocolate in your hands. It's a thick and rich hot chocolate, with the added buzz of cinnamon and chilli for an extra kick.

The only drawback is that I find that the service isn't always great - it seems like there's a lot of people behind the counter running around without actually doing anything while half a dozen people stand there waiting to be served. It's also a little cramped, but I do think their Azteca hot chocolate makes up for what they lack in service.
