Reviews of Shoppingtown Hotel
There are a few things about this place that makes it more than just your standard suburban pub and the one thing that continues to draw me back is the magnificent view of the city that you get from the balcony. I could sit on that balcony all day looking at the view (okay, I'm exaggerating, but it is definitely worth the trip up here). The other thing about this place is that the Shoppingtown Hotel is more than just your local pub that has live bands, they actually have bands playing who have been around since the 80s. Everytime I've been up here there have been advertisements from bands that I thought had vanished into obsolescence (though they are now playing at the Shoppingtown Hotel). They also have a really cool beer garden. However, the biggest negative about this place is that it can be really hard getting to if you don't have a car, or aren't planning on driving. Still, I've got to come up here one day to see one of those classic eighties bands.
We recently stayed at the hotel and primarily were very impressed with room size and quality of the family room.
Bathroom size and the quality of the fittings were great and the addition of the full sized fridge was unmatched by anyone.
But then we dined in the sports bar area, what an absolute disgrace. I ordered the rump with chips, veg and garlic butter and
my partner a chicken schnitzel with chips, salad and pepper gravy. I was beside myself when I saw how quickly we were served and
thought wonderful thoughts of a great night ahead, my steak was served with the chips and salad and my partners with chips and veg,
and simple mistake made in many kitchens, but then I started to wonder why my garlic butter was not melting over my steak .....
then reality hit, hard, omg it was stone motherless cold, I thought so as not to spoil the evening I would not complain and let sleeping
dogs lie, then our friend accompanying us ordered a grazers pie and was apologized to for its tardiness when it finally arrived,
he opened the pie to no steam, so as he is a little more forward he asked for it to be reheated and with no problems it was taken to the kitchen
and returned shortly again to be open with no steam and able to place his finger deep into the pie with no discomfort.
As this was my birthday and had previously promised my partner that I would enjoy myself, I enjoyed some cold beers and returned to our room,
a short disagreement over leaving the balcony door open for air or not was soon won by my partner who wanted it to remain shut, and luckily so,
as whilst laying on the bed, watching the TV I glanced to my left to see a large brown rat scurrying around the balcony.
Happily after the best sleep I have had on a stone slab in a long time we escaped early the next morning.
Dinner at the bistro end of July 2009.
Fast, efficient and friendly service.
Just renovated - still some works going on.
The ambience is somewhat reminiscent of a large swimming pool complex - wide open spaces, big windows (good views), and LOTS of tile.
