    Ultimate Melbourne

If you’re not on a rooftop, in a laneway or tucked up low in a basement you’re just not doing Melbourne the way it should be done. Accessed through the doors of the Melbourne Supper Club, Siglo is the ultimate rooftop experience, with the Princess Theatre as the backdrop, awesome city skyline views, European bar menu, fine champagne, great wine and a cashed-up clientele. Relax and raise a glass to our great city.

This rooftop watering hole has literally and metaphorically raised the bar.

Are the city's rooftops the new laneways? Not so long ago, the bar location du jour was any available nook or cranny tucked out of sight down a stinky bin-strewn alley. But a bout of lateral thinking brought on by laws banishing smokers from polite indoor company (except, of course, at Crown's high roller gambling dens) has seen a proliferation of rooftop saloons that stretch the definition of a Melbourne-style bar. The best thing about this latest trend is that cash and imagination are being thrown at the city's rooftops. Sensing, quite rightly, that it is not just the puffers who enjoy a beer with a view in the great outdoors, bar owners are creating destination spaces rather than tacked-on afterthoughts. Siglo, the recently opened drinking hole crowning Con Christopoulos' Spring Street world of entertainment (European, City Wine Shop, Melbourne Supper Club) is one rooftop location that has literally and metaphorically raised the bar. Accessed through the unmarked Supper ...

The prevalence of Spanish and Portuguese on the menu sets the ambience for the coming summer nights.

Overlooking a resplendently lit Parliament House with the spire of St Patrick's Cathedral looming behind, Siglo is the crown of Con Christopoulos' shrine to degustation. Enter via the unmarked door next to the European and appreciate the elegance of the Supper Club as you ascend, guided by friendly hosts, to the classy Siglo. The liquor is decidedly old-world - you might wish you were being paid in euros because it ain't cheap. But you get what you pay for here: quality and attentive personal service. The prevalence of Spanish and Portuguese on the menu sets the ambience for the coming summer nights; think romantic dates and convivial gatherings. Daters beware, though: the idyllic vistas lend themselves to wedding photos, so best avoid Siglo if you see trouble on the horizon. The adjacent Princess Theatre can't help but show off, and a visit to Siglo is worth it just to see the giant 19th-century advertisement that adorns its wall.
