Two hospitable sisters have devised an artfully spiced menu and a cosy, creative space.
South End is a cafe that isn't in the phone book, scarcely cracks a mention in the virtual world and is easy to miss even when you know where it is. It is close to where the old smoke stacks mark the start of the highway heading out of Newtown. This end of King Street is less flash, more second-hand in its shop style and more interesting than the trendy north end. What's more, it smells great. Butter and sugar aromas waft from Polka Dot Cookies and Cakes, meeting up with the fragrance of spices at Fiji Market opposite. And you can smell the perfume of cumin and rice at Vinayak Video, which sells delicacies from Maya Sweets in Surry Hills, the minute you step inside. The Indian shop is next door to South End, which sits modestly on a street corner, under the Newtown Theatre. Outside, a couple of dogs, noses on front paws, mooch patiently near a few bentwood stools and tables.
