What a gem! Been here a few times and dropped in again after work last Friday, around 6pm and were seated within minutes. It's BYO, free corkage (brilliant) but we found we were sculling the bottle as the food had come and gone and fellow patrons were eyeing our table off right at the end. Aside from the pressure to eat as quickly as possible, it really was an awesome night (or 45 minutes rather). The food was authentic and true to its name, 'spicy'. We had the pork rice paper rolls as starters, a bit bland but aren't most non-deep fried selections? Followed by the chu chee chicken curry and the Pad Prik King with prawns, both very spicy dishes but soooo tasty.
Toilets are tucked away in the hostel next door so you'll need to ask the staff for the key. Bottle-o just across the road too so if you forget your bottle/beer, worth putting your name down then hopping across the street. A cheap and cheerful choice!
What day/time did you come? We've stopped coming here recently because the service got really slow. Several times, we had to wait close to an hour to get our food after placing our orders, which is especially problematic at lunchtime.
Visited here with a member of the family that was over from Singapore on a Thurs evening. Place was packed, but we were seated straight away. Food was great, service was efficient, and it is BYO. Although the main courses were good and spice, the mini spring rolls where the smallest spring rolls I have ever seen! Would recommend it for a quick tasty bite to eat
I like Thai food and am spoilt for choice in Sydney, however this place is one of the best in the area. Always busy, but that hasn't been an issue whenever I rock up and order. I highly recommend this place for Thai food lovers.
I'm a new fan of this great Thai restaurant. It's always packed, and I can see why! Fast service, and really tasty & fresh ingredients. So, now that I'm hooked, I'll work my way through the menu for sure.
Another great Thai restaurant close to work. The food is reflective of the restaurant name and always top quality. There is normally a wait to get into the restaurant as it is only very small but the tables turn over very quickly so don't be too concerned about the line. The food always is served very fast and to perfection!
I give this restaurant 5 stars - not because it's '5 star' service, but because the value and quality of the food is excellent! We had the spring rolls for entree (stock standard - good though!) and then we had the beef salad, pork belly, and the yellow seafood curry which were all superb. Excellent value for money - will definitely go again.
Regardless of financial restraints, "this is to hot for me" or waiting outside for a table, the one thing that is true of Spice I Am is that once you've eaten here once all the above will rate so highly on the do a care about lists in your brain that you'll be ordering the specials, the spiciest dishes and enjoying cold beers at the pub across the road during your weekly trips to this - the bestest, most authentic and delicious Thai restaurant in the area and the maybe even surrounding areas.
I've heard great things about Spice I Am, so I came here with high expectations. We arrived at 6:30pm on a Saturday night and there were lots of people waiting outside already. Surprisingly though, we managed to get a table for four pretty quickly. (Actually, it was more a table for two with four people huddled around it.)
We ordered a crispy pork belly dish, som tum (papaya salad), a crispy whole fish with a green sauce served in a shot glass, a prawn dish and a jungle curry. They were all great, but I didn't think the food here was any better than Chat Thai.
All in all, it was a great meal, but don't come here if you want to have a long and leisurely meal. (The scores of hungry people waiting on the street will stare you down!)
Also, for those who are used to living in a cash-less society, bring along some cash. We just managed to get together enough cash for our bill and tip. :)
I'm increasing my rating from my previous review. Ate in here again last night and tried an even wider variety of dishes. I can't believe how every time I try something new here, I find a new favourite. The Kai Ka Tee (Shredded chicken in coconut milk topped with Thai salad) is one of the best dishes I have ever had. So light and fresh! The soft shell crab is also delicious. If you haven't been, you're missing out.
We love this place for takeaway. We've eaten at the restaurant at least 3 times but find the wait for a table and the rush in/rush out just way too hard. If you've got plenty of time on your hands then put your name down on the list amd walk up the street to the local pub for a beer. The quality of food here makes it one of Sydney's best places for thai and is worth the wait. Try the basil crispy pork belly (amazing) and the beef mussaman (devine). You wont be disappointed. We get take away from here every week (a bit pricy with dinner for two at $50) but its well worth the walk down the hill and back up again from our house. They're not open on Monday's but do open for lunch and dinner Tuesday - Sunday.
We used to go to this place regulary as their food are very good (although a bit pricey) and had always put up with the unfriendly service. But the last time we were there the service was just horrible - and the 12 of us were forced into a table which really should just fit 6 and when we requested another table we were ignored. Now we dont go there anymore
You'll hear again and again that this is the best thai in Sydney and it really is. I am yet to have anything on the menu i didn't think was fantastic. The wait for a table just seems to get longer and longer and it is quite cramped so the best advice is to get take away, it only takes about 10 minutes. The Fish Curry (mousse) in Banana leaf is amazing. Avoid if you don't like spicy hot food.
