Spice Temple is one of the best restaurants in Sydney for good quality food, superb atmosphere and I must not forget to mention the great music!

A must try for anyone that likes a good asian style meal with a bit of spice. Whilst it is a little more expensive than your corner shop, it is certainly a lot cheaper than a number of other "known chef" restaurants around Sydney.
The food is great and is packed full of flavour. There is good range of meals that cater for every ones spice tolerance levels, from very mild to reasonably hot dishes.
The food is topped off by an excellent atmosphere that makes the experience one that is memorable.

I went to the Sydney Spice Temple on a Friday night recently in a group of 6 people and we absolutely loved it.

They only take 2 dinner sittings, either 6.30pm or 8.30pm, and we opted for the later start time. We arrived just before 8.30pm and as our table wasnt ready we were advised to wait in the bar adjacent to the dining area. The bar area tended to get a little hectic as more 8.30pm diners arrived but the 6.30pm diners still needed to leave. We finally got taken to our table about 9pm, so were pretty hungry by this stage!

The dining area is very dimly litwalking to our table was a bit like walking into a nightclub. The tables all have very low hanging lights directly over them. I guess this keeps the focus on the food appearance and the taste.

The waiter was great he knew about all the dishes we asked about and suggested excellent wines for us. He was happy to have a few jokes, but was also very professional and accommodating too.

The food was amazing.take some risks and try different things, especially some of the hotter dishes. Among many dishes we tried things like the Strange flavour white cut chicken and the Hot and numbing dry Wagyu beef and they were sensational. I think my favourite dish might have been the Beef fillet in fire waterBroth blackened with chilli and Sichuan peppercorn, but it was hard to choose just one favourite.

We ate an absolute feast and had plenty of wine to drink and I thought the overall bill was really reasonable about $140 a head.

Thanks Spice Temple..I cant wait to come back again!

Note - I dont think I would take my elderly parents or children here, but for everyone else it is a great experience. If you want to be seated on time, then the 6.30pm sitting would be a better option. Its also not suitable for disabled people as the entrance involves a long, dimly lit, spiral staircase.

I LOVE this restaurant! The food is amazing as is the dark, sultry dcor! The lighting in this restaurant is fantastic. Each table has individual lights which drop down low from the ceiling and light up the food in the center of the table but leave faces subtly lit creating a very personal dining experience. It is always very busy yet you are never disturbed by the other tables which you can hardly notice because of the great lighting. All the dishes I have tried have been incredible but some of them are definitely not suitable for those who dont have a love of chilli so beware of those written in red.

I visited Spice temple just before Christmas in 2010. It was am amazing experience and the food was fantastic. I would highly recommend the tea-smoked duck breast with pickled cabbage and mustard. I don't normally eat pork - i don't like the consistency - but i tried the roast pork belly with coriander, peanuts and sesame seeds and may just have been converted. It was beautiful. The wine selection is varied - with many good Australian wines (WA being my favourite). They actually have 100 wines on their list - this is apparently to ensure diners experience the 'best possible match for Neil Perrys extraordinary Asian food'. We ordered three mains between two of us and had to take the third one home as there was so much food. The service was impeccable and the staff were very friendly. One thing i would say is that it is not so easy to find from off the street - i walked into 'Rock pool' firstly - as did my friend before finding the right entrance for 'Spice Temple'. I would definitely recommend. I'll be back there - soon i hope.

Unfortunately the review given to the Spice Temple in the Herald Sun (which was the reason I went) was far more generous than it should have been.
Whilst the service was flawless and the wine list was exceptional the food truly let it down.
There were 5 of us squished onto a tiny table in nearly pitch black surroundings as well as a dangeously dark staircase and bar area.
We ordered a couple of items including the Kung po chicken, very dissapointing and the waitress even suggested we dont eat eat anything but the chicken. Nearly the entire bowl was full of dried chillies, pretty pointless really. The duck was a highlight but out of 6 shared meals it was the only saving grace.
All in all, I am sorry Neil Perry but you have missed the mark on this one!

After reading the other reviews here I went to Spice Temple with fairly low expectations, but I'm happy to report I had a wonderful experience at this classy establishment. The venue's kick-ass design and fit out will stay in my mind for many years to come - it's slick and modern but still somehow evokes the mood of Hong Kong in the 1950s (at least what I image it was like anyway ... ). The food was bloody good - we had a squid dish, chicken dish, lamb pancakes, pork belly and vegies and all were delicious. We considered the banquet menu but the more interesting dishes are not on it and I'm glad we opted for a la carte. The service from our waiter was flawless and he didn't flinch when I asked for a doggy bag at the end - which was a sign to us that Spice Temple is a REAL Chinese restaurant. Another reviewer below complained that it was not fine dining, but I don't think it's trying to be. This is traditional Chinese cooking with a modern twist. I will definitely be back.

BTW the bar is also good. They have cocktails matched to each Chinese star sign - I highly recommend The Pig.

I'm not sure whether Niel Perry hype killed my experience at this restaurant. Before going there for dinner, I had read great things about the food but unfortunately it just did not deliver what I was expecting. To be fair, we did have a large group and ordered the banquet and while there sere some beautiful dishes, there was nothing that really impressed. However I did love the pickles and cucumber that were placed on the table to help with the spiciness of the food but the food was not spicy at all so they really were like an accompaniment. Also there was a meat filled pancake which was a complimentary dish given to us which was my favourite dish.

The interior of this restaurant is impressive and creates a very moody and sensual atmosphere, however the crowd it attracts does not match and is a little dull. The service is not so great and we found the waiters tripping over each other all night and the timing of the meals was night right as some people in our party were left a while without their meals. Also cocktails took a while and came back quite weak.

I will give it another try and order a la carte but overall it did not deliver anywhere near the experience I was expecting. I was expecting to have a stand out schezuan experience at this restaurant. You are better off spending your money in some of Sydney's other modern asian restaurants/bars which actually deliver atmosphere, great food, cocktails and service.

A curtain swishing in the wind – or so it seems (it’s an image on a TV screen on the door) beckons you into the pleasure den below. Take a culinary journey through regional China at Neil Perry’s Spice Temple. Elegant, modern with exquisitely presented dishes. Tried and loved from the menu are stir-fried spinach Sichuan style and steamed eggplant with three flavours (garlic, coriander and sweet pork). More please. You’re likely to spot the celebrity chef flitting between the restaurants in his culinary empire. Don’t save this one for a special occasion, the servings are very generous and the prices much better than you’d think. Take friends to share!
