Searching for Japanese food after a movie, my fellow recommended Suishaya Inn as an enduring restaurant of reliable quality. Furthermore, it seemed to be the only Japanese restaurant in Ringwood unless you count the Eastland food court (which I do; however it was closed). Despite the late hour (9pm or so), Suishaya Inn was still open, with plenty of diners enjoying their meals. The decor was consistently clean and tidy, but a bit less Japanese-themed than one would expect. The menu offered a range of dishes; however the vegetarian section was decidedly minimalist. Nonetheless, we ordered, and the food arrived promptly. The dishes were enjoyable but not spectacular - mostly due to the poor range of meatless options. I would recommend the tempura vegetables, but the noodles are pretty standard stuff. For what you get, prices are not great, but I have no complaints about the staff - they were friendly and attentive. In sum, Suishaya Inn is a fairly decent place to eat if you're after Japanese cuisine in Ringwood, particularly as it has good opening hours and seems popular. This would be one to avoid for vegetarians, but given the number and extent of positive reviews, perhaps Suishaya Inn's meatful dishes are their strong suite? Worth a try.
A nice Japanese restaurant in the eastern suburbs, tucked between some motorcycle shops but don't let that deter you. Service is always friendly and polite, although when asked if we wanted the entrees to come out at the same time and we said yes, they ended up coming out at different times. This didn't really worry us as we were sharing anyway. The gyoza were nice but I must admit that I've had better elsewhere. The nasu dengaku (grilled eggplant) is lovely. We tried two different teppanyaki dishes: 1) Hotakekai (scallops) - I loved this one and would definitely order it again. The sauce is lovely and you get a generous quantity of 10 scallops; 2) Steak Kobe Style - nice meaty chunks of eye fillet that were tender and juicy. The black sesame icecream for dessert is an aquired taste - I quite enjoy it, but I know it's not to everyone's palate. Tables are a little close to each other and if you're near the front of the restaurant you do get the cold air from the front door in winter, but this restaurant is always very busy on the Saturday night's that I've been, and I'll certainly be back. Getting 10% discount for cash payment is always a bonus!
A really nice Japanese restaurant, with quality food, and reasonable prices.
The restaurant is hidden amongst a shopping strip on Maroondah hwy in Ringwood, and isn't all that impressive to look at from the outside, but once you step in you can feel the authentic Japanese ambiance!
I highly reccomend the Nishimi (not sure of the spelling) banquet, as you get a delicious miso soup, delicious bits of fish, some tempura, and some steak from the teppanyaki hot plate.
The waitresses all wear kimono's, and the sushi chef and teppanyaki chef are behind the bar working away - all adding to a really nice Japanese experience!
There is a special room out the back for especially bookings - which i didnt get to see - but might be worth calling up about if you are having a function.
Great food, and great service - so recommend this place!
