I ate here with my wife the other day and sorry eelwilson but everything we ordered was wonderful, the staff were friendly and attentive, couldn't fault a thing. Maybe Mr.Eel caught them on a bad night, or maybe we found them on a good one. Looking at the reviews i'd say the first, but anyway, this is about the fourth or fifth time i've eaten here and I will most certainly be returning! Thanks Sun Wah. :-)
The staff who greeted us seemed to be confused on whether our booking could be honored or not, obviously Valentines is busy but a booking is a booking. Once that was sorted we sat down.
There was the choice of set valentines menu's or ordering off the menu. I asked if we could order off the menu & was told it would take ages & we would be disappointed. Staff were told to promote the set menu, but at the expense of the normal menu & with words like that, not a great start. After we waited for them to take our order they arrived with no pad & tried taking the order by memory, they arrived back 5 mins later & we had to repeat it again.
Finally the food arrived, thats when the fun really started.
Chrispy chicken that is no more than KFC.
Shanghai Pork dumplings that were leathery & cold. They were the worst impersonation of a Shanghai pork dumpling I have ever eaten & I have had a few.
The recommended scallop dish with crispy pork looked nothing like the photo & tasted even worse.
The curry puffs resembled something from the Woolworth's frozen food section.
During the whole unpleasant eating experience the service continued to be an episode of Faulty Towers.
We honestly felt like we were on a TV program & there was a hidden camera.
I travel to China & love Chinese but this was the worst impersonation of a Chinese restaurant I have ever experienced. It was a disgrace.
Totally wrecked what was suppose to be a great night out eating some great Yum Cha.
in the end we walked out.
We dined here at Sun Wah last night without a reservation. We arrived really early and the restaurant was empty being the first ones. We timed it just minutes before the dinner rush and it was filling up fast. The food is beyond reproach, the service perfectly friendly and attentive. We selected a variety of things but definitely recommend the black angus eye fillet and the salt & pepper squid - so tender the best I have ever had. The only downside was the wait for our desserts but they were in full motion and completely packed out by the time we ordered this. But the dessert platter was definitely worth the wait!
I saw the glowing reviews and decided to go there with my husband and our friend. Called to find out that the phone number listed in here is their other business number which then points you to 'for all restaurant enquiries call the other number' . ok ... a false start but fair enough. Eventually I get hold of them and ask to book a dinner for 3 at 7.45pm. To this I am told 'can you come in earlier as we close at 9'. WTF? ok, so we get there at 7.35. There are 2 couples dining, no sign of any staff. we ring the bell on the front counter.. noone comes. wait 2 minutes and ring again... still noone. My friend goes to the kitchen door and calls - no response. Other diners are still enjoinng their meal in the mean time. We call out again. no better. We spent about 10 minutes in there trying to get a table and left. we ended up going to a Thai place up the street and happily spent $150 and were out by 8.50 pm. I guess they miss out on our business and we are not going back. The thing that got me is that this place has so many more reviews than any other restaurant in the area and they are all glowing! even the ones listed under the 'Negative tab'. These people must write their own reviews!
You know the saying don't judge the book by its cover. Well this applies to this place we dined at - Sun Wah in Mordialloc. It was a nice surprise as I've been pass this place heaps of times but never had the chance to try it. And now I am glad to have dined here. It is a bit ordinary from the outside but once you walk in, it is completely different. It is really classy place and looks like a fine dining restaurant and boy the place proved it was. It had the similar fine dining experience we've had at Jacques Reymond maybe even better but with larger portions. Anyway we enjoyed the chef's 6 course degustation menu where every dish was absolutely presented perflectly and the flavours were just awesome. As stated in their menu, all the items were their signature dishes and this is definitely the case as I have never eaten most of these ever before. The dishes just melted in your mouth. Haven't tasted any asian cuisine that had your tastebuds pumping for more. Just want to commend this place for its fantastic all round food and service - 100% better than what we experienced a few nights ago at another chinese local restaurant that was a disaster. Sun Wah is truly a fine dining experience to remember.
I would like to comment and how wonderful our dinner was at Sun Wah last night. This has certaintly different to the norm of a chinese restaurant. Their menus seem to be one of a kind with innovative dishes all round. And their service was impeccable could not fault. We ate here with a group of 4 and ordered from their extensive wine list and they recommended the right wines with the dishes. We started with the entree platter which was an assortment of dim sum and salt & pepper calamari. We also ordered the ginger pear scallops and the mini prawn hot pot. So beautifuyl presented. For maiins, we had the peking duck, which they served for us and terriyaki eye fillet along with thier coconut spiced chilli chicken. They were cooked perfectly and the flavours just complemented each other. Now dessert, Sun Wah seem to beat the other chinese restaurants for this - very different. We chose the 5 spice sticky date, schuian pepper chocolate pudding and the jasmine tea baileys cheesecake. These were all fantastic and the perfect end to our dinner. This will now be our regular place to go.
Had a great experience at Sun Wah. Fantastic service, great food and atmosphere. They have some great specials. We only ordered from their specials blackboard. We had the ginger pear scallops with pork belly to start with. Then the steamed barramundi with fun gor dumpling in a broth. We finished off with the jasmin tea creme brule with spiced lychees. The whole night was like you would expect in a 5 star fine dining hotel and was so memorable and can't wait to go back. Well done Sun Wah.
We dine here on the weekend and it was really impressive. We arrived quite late and the place was full. The host was great - he was very friendly. The service was great, the staff always refilling our wine & water glasses and the food was fantastic. Haven't had chinese this good in ages. Very well presented with every dish silver served. We had a set menu and loved the panseared scallops and the stuffed chicken. Plus the Chocolate Won Tons were to die for. We felt like VIPs but the staff were doing the same to the other customers. Must be just great service. Can't wait to go back.
Sun Wah is that hidden gem - that just wants you going back for more. Having just dined here for Valentine's Day I like to say it is the best chinese I have ever tasted. The place was set up nicely with candles for our romantic dinner. We were treated to a complimentary glass of sparkling on arrival. We selected one of their valentine's set menus - the plated menu which is quite rare for a chinese restaurant. Chef's canapes came first - it was yum yum then our soup - we selected the shredded duckling soup. For entree i selected the crispy prawn parcels and my partner ordered the steamed prawn dumplings. it was really yum cha style. For mains, we selected the terriyaki eye fillet and the deep of the sea. Aboslutely perfect - beef was lovely and tender and the seafood just perfect. Then desset the chocolate won tons were to die for and the mango pudding was soft and we just wanted more. The staff were fantastic. They were always attending to us and filling our water glasses. Couldn't recommend a better place for that special dinner or just for your everyday meal. Just brilliant and very good value for money.
Celebrated Chinese New Year at Sun Wah and just wanted to commend the staff on what a wonderful evening we had. The place was so brightly decorated with chinese decor, balloons, red runners on our tables and a chinese lantern centrepiece. It really shows they really put the effort in. The food was great as well so beautiful put together really fine dining quality. They provided entertainment with games, chinese horoscopes, hamper draws, karaoke and the lion dance of course. Can't wait to go next year. Good work Sun Wah.
