The reason why Sunny Nguyen is important is that it is just about the only place in Footscray you can get anything to eat after midnight, at least, anywhere near the station. If you wanna go up as far as the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Gordon Sts, there is an African cafe that stays open pretty late for the taxi drivers and a pizza parlour that stays open pretty late too, presumably for people that have just waited five hours in Emergency at The Western Hospital. Pretty much everything else closes by nine, apart from a couple of Chinese Restaurants that close at 10, and an Italian place that closes at about 11, all in Barkly Street. Oh yeah and then there's some stuff at the gas station at the intersection of Nicholson St and Whitehall St.

There are two reasons why Sunny Nguyen stays open 'till 1. The first is that they are baking bread rolls and vanilla slices that everybody will be eating in cafes all over Footscray the next day. Some bakeries do this by getting up at 4, but the guys in this bakery don't look like morning guys. There is also a friendly guy.

Sunny Nguyen bakery is actually pretty good in the Vietnamese style of bakery, which means bread that is mostly air. The rolls are only 40c and they are very light rolls, same with the white bread. The wholemeal bread is still light, but it's not bad. I'm not saying it is artisan bread, but it doesn't taste of sawdust like some cheap bread. They do some Italian-looking flat bread. You can usually find a pie or two in the warmer right up until they close, and they aren't bad. The cakes concept tends more towards 'filling' than 'dainty'. I recommend the croissants. They are cheap and big and they are made with butter, not with that stuff some places use in place of butter because it doesn't melt no matter how hot the oven gets. I mean you eat it, you wait long enough, you get to re-use it, that stuff. They also have chocolate croissants which I haven't tried.

In the bain-marie you will find some spring rolls and dim sims, which tend towards tough by 1 in the morning. You will also find some meat skewers and if you're lucky, they won't have run out of $4 hunks of chicken. Most everybody likes this. It's a bit oily, because it is chicken they have covered in oil and baked in the oven, but it's very tasty, especially if you are a guy. There's also a cold drinks cabinet which also has milk and eggs in it.

This place is a pretty good deal, especially since there isn't anything else.
