High Tea comes with high expectations and executive chef Justin Zammit at the SwissĂ´tel is certainly up to the challenge. Transforming traditional scones and cucumber sandwiches into an extravagant affair, Zammit presents a beautiful array of unusual treats. Jellies, mousses, macaroons and mini tortes, cakes and scones are served as a buffet on weekends along with a four-tier chocolate fountain. This is definitely one from Alice in Wonderland.

The beauty of a hotel bar is you can pretend to be whoever you want - in my case a suave and sophisticated millionaire playboy - and not have this illusion shattered by either bumping into someone you know or being pushed and jostled at an overcrowded bar among the hoi polloi. Since most Sydney hotels are cottoning on that I'm not the man of mystery I pretend to be, it's time to try somewhere new and so I optimistically head to Crossroads, the Swissotel's cocktail bar. To call it discreet would be putting it mildly. From the street level you'd never know there was a bar eight floors up (along with the reception area) and even the hotel's entrance is so small it's easy to walk right by. Since men of mystery don't drink beer I order the Belvedere Pure martini along with the smoked salmon and garlic prawn mezze plate. After five minutes, however, the waitress returns empty-handed: she's forgotten my order. I tell her again only to be served with a glass of what appears to be vodk...
