Good things are embracing a rare and pleasing outlook while sipping and sitting in comfort. Bad things are watching other people doing exactly the same, leaving no space for you. Hoping to avoid the second scenario, we head towards a calm bend on the Parramatta River: the recently renovated Sydney Rowing Club. After signing in, we whirl into a large room containing tall, sleek white chairs and tables, designer lampshades and glass cabinets filled with trophies, medallions and other sporting prizes. A striking river view stretches beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows but every table on the small outdoor terrace is taken. Pah! Further on we strike gold on the long, two-level outdoor deck, reached via bifold doors from a large indoor dining room. Here, gloriously, are plenty of tables, chairs and benches, plant boxes filled with mondo grass and wooden decking soaked in early evening sunlight and shaded by white umbrellas. And, oh what joy, a deep, unobstructed view of rip...
