Tai Pan Licensed Restaurant

Directions
Taipan's long-established, large split-level restaurant is famous for its daily yum cha. The recently added House Roast counter provides finger-licking dishes such as crackling belly pork, soya chicken and roast duck. Evening meals are highlighted with their much-acclaimed Cantonese and Peking duck, hotpots, hearty noodle dishes, or live lobster and crab from the tank. Children are welcome, and with a private room and on-site parking it's well worth it to book ahead.

Restaurant has been around for 20+ years and i believe is one of the best in Melbourne, however, on a recent visit i would say service is not as polished as it once was. I have deducted a point as one of the dishes ordered had a vital ingredient changed without explanation. The seafood basket in potato basket arrived minus the potato basket?? It instead had a basket made with filo pastry? Poor substitute of such a vital ingredient. The waiters appeared very rushed and unattentative even though the restaurant was only 3/4 full. Food however was top notch with quality ingredients

I have been here 2 times for yum cha at lunch time. Even it was weekday this place was very busy and packed. I found out the food was very good with the authentic Cantonese taste. The services were OK if you understand their Hong Kong style. Beleive me, the service over here is much much better than in Hong Kong.

Can't go wrong here. Very authentic yum cha at reasonable prices. Very noisy and hard to get a table if you don't book on weekends. A definite must try for all Melbournians.

The venerable Tai Pan restaurant has been around since at least the 1990s and hasn't changed the recipe for success: good food and fast service at a reasonable price.

Although this restaurant has a lot of seating, it can get very busy and crowded at mealtimes, so it's best to book ahead to avoid a long wait. There is a car park which is often full at busy times, but there is plenty of off-street parking.

The Yum Cha selection at lunchtime has all the standard Hong Kong Chinese favourites. Recommended.
